PolyU OSH Excellence Award 2026 – Call for Nominations

PolyU OSH Excellence Award 2026 – Call for Nominations   Nominations are now open for the PolyU Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Excellence Award 2026, which recognises outstanding staff members who have made significant contributions to enhancing workplace safety and health at the University. Deadline for nominations: 29 May 2026   Eligibility Full time PolyU staff (individuals or teams) with at least 12 months of service. Each Unit may submit up to two nominations. Nomination requires endorsement by the Head of Unit. Award Categories Overall Gold (1) : HK$5,000 Silver (1) : HK$3,000 Bronze (1) : HK$1,000 Thematic Best Innovation Award (1): HK$3,000 Best Application of Technology Award (1): HK$3,000 Shortlisted applicants will receive a HK$25 coffee cash coupon. Long Holiday Lab Safety Reminder As the holidays approach, please keep these key safety measures in mind before leaving the laboratory: Update Emergency Contacts: Ensure the emergency contact information on your lab door is up-to-date. Pre-Holiday Checklist for all laboratory personnel:  Shut off and secure all gas cylinders and lines; Do not leave experiments unattended; Close fume cupboard sashes completely; Ensure backup power, gases, and water for critical equipment; Turn off and unplug non-essential equipment, if possible; and Lock doors to prevent unauthorized access to laboratory areas.

Chemical Emergency Drill Enhances Incident Response Readiness

HSO, in collaboration with Campus Control Centre (CCC), successfully conducted a chemical emergency drill on 15 Jan 2026 to enhance emergency preparedness and strengthen inter-departmental coordination.   The drill simulated a chemical spill incident occurring in Core U, assessing response procedures including hazard identification, area control, emergency communication, and incident management. Specialists from HSO led the technical assessment, safety controls and overall response management, while CCC supported the drill through effective communication, access and crowd control and operational coordination.   Key objectives of the drill included: Evaluate the effectiveness of the existing chemical emergency response procedures Strengthen coordination between HSO and CCC during emergency situation Enhance staff readiness and situational awareness in handling chemical incidents   The exercise was carried out smoothly and demonstrated a high level of collaboration among all the participating teams. HSO would like to thank CCC and all personnel involved for their active participation and commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
