The “INSPIRE” Mentorship Programme Annual Gathering 2022 on 6 January 2023 brought together over 250 mentors and student mentees to celebrate their invaluable mentoring journeys, and enabled the University to express its heartfelt gratitude to all mentors for facilitating PolyU students’ holistic development and all-round growth.

President's Sharing Session with Students 2022
In response to a suggestion made at the President’s Sharing Session held on 3 October, the Student Affairs Office organised an add-on session of the President’s Sharing Session on 23 November, allowing students more time to communicate with the Central Management Team (CMT).
Over 40 students attended the sharing session and exchanged ideas with the CMT. Students' major areas of concern included campus safety, library facilities, social distancing measures, and anti-deception messages for non-local students. The sharing session was a good opportunity for CMT to communicate with students and move forward for a better PolyU.
Splashing for lights chasing our dreams
To mark the 85th anniversary of PolyU, the third talk of the “PolyU 85th Anniversary Public Lecture Series: Together We Dream, We Fly” was successfully held on 22 November 2022 at the Jockey Club Auditorium. Ms GUO Jingjing, the Olympic Gold Medallist was invited to speak on “Splashing for Lights, Chasing our Dreams撥水見光 追逐夢想”, sharing her path to becoming a Olympic Gold medallist and encouraging young people to pursue their dreams. The lecture was attended by more than 800 guests, staff, students, alumni and public face-to-face, and over 160,000 audiences online.
Student Talent Night
The Student Talent Night was successfully held last night on 25 October. Over 230 guests, students and staff participated in the Night either face-to-face or online!
PolyU’s talented students from the PolyU Rope Skipping Team, PolyU Chinese Orchestra, the Hong Kong Wushu Team, the choir and dance teams, Chinese Orchestra, Hong Kong Rope Skipping Team, Wushu Team and The PolyArts, Flamingo and other choir and dancing teams gathered and showcased their talents on stage.
The Night was also graced by the presence of the Council and Court members and the Central Management Team of the University. In his welcome address, Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, the President, emphasised PolyU’s “proud tradition of promoting the whole-person development of our students, providing them with various opportunities to showcase and enhance their unique talents.”
Moreover, Mr Phoebus Ng, PolyU alumnus and current member of P1X3L, a popular local music group, performed and celebrated with us together as the guest performer at the Student Talent Night.
The Talent Night, which is part of the Student Talent Week (25-28 October), is a colourful celebration event for PolyU’s 85th Anniversary. Organised by the Student Affairs Office (SAO), PolyU’s talented students gather together and perform at their best for this celebration.

STARS Residential College Unveiling Ceremony
This academic year, PolyU has initiated the Special Talents Admission and Recognition Scheme (STARS). Secondary students who have demonstrated remarkable talents in sports, arts and culture, community service and leadership, as well as in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) are provided with special opportunities to receive quality tertiary education. Under the Scheme, the University will provide all-round support to students in the form of the STARS Residential College and the STARS Scholarship.Officiated by PolyU Outstanding Alumnus and Former Chairman of the Hong Kong Housing Society, Mr Marco Wu Moon-hoi, and PolyU’s Vice President (Student and Global Affairs) Prof. Ben Young, the STARS Residential College was officially unveiled last week, witnessed by PolyU staff and students. The plaque unveiled on the occasion was of Mr Wu’s Chinese calligraphy, a generous gift from Mr Wu to the College. Mr Wu’s professionalism as a surveyor and his dedication to serving society over the years are aspirational for STARS residents. Mr Wu also shared his personal experience of career development, making it a very meaningful night for our students.
PolyU 85th Anniversary Public Lecture Series - An Ordinary Dreamer
Riding on the success of the first talk held in September, the second talk of the “PolyU 85th Anniversary Public Lecture Series: Together We Dream, We Fly”, titled “An Ordinary Dreamer: Live with a Dream in the Reality 平凡的尋夢者：在現實中活出夢想”, was held on 14 October 2022 in hybrid mode, with around 100 attendees in person and online.
Mr Bayern Chui, partner of KPMG China, Hong Kong office, and our PolyU Alumnus, began to share his views on dreams after the welcome address delivered by Prof. Albert Chan, Dean of Students. With the stories of his personal experience, Bayern shared how chasing dreams can be realistic and how passion and determination is fundamental for achieving your goals in life.
A Q&A session was conducted after Bayern’s fascinating sharing, with the facilitation of Prof. Chan. The audience and Bayern had a fruitful conversation on the accounting industry and working hard for your goals. At the end of the talk, Prof. Ben Young, Vice President (Student and Global Affairs), presented a souvenir to Bayern to express our appreciation.
President's Sharing Session with Students
With the commencement of a new academic year, around 120 students joined the President’s sharing session and exchanged views with the Central Management Team (CMT) on 3 October 2022. President Teng gave a presentation on the University’s latest development and achievements, and CMT replied to questions raised by participants. Students' major areas of concern include financial subsidies for non-local students, study-related issues and hall administration. The sharing session is a great opportunity for the CMT to communicate with students and move forward to build a better PolyU together.
PolyU 85th Anniversary Public Lecture Series - The Dream Hunters
To celebrate PolyU’s 85th Anniversary, the Student Affairs Office (SAO) is organising the “PolyU 85th Anniversary Public Lecture Series: Together We Dream, We Fly”. This Series invites renowned young achieving speakers with remarkable accomplishments in different aspects to share their inspiring journey in chasing and actualising their dreams.
The first talk of this Series, titled “The Dream Hunters 獵夢者”, was held on 16 September 2022 in hybrid mode, with over 120 attendees in person and online. To kick off the talk, Prof. Albert Chan, Dean of Students, delivered a welcome address to introduce Mr Jack Chung, President and Co-founder of Mission Until Dawn (MUD) and our PolyU Alumnus. Jack shared his dream of designing and constructing Safe, Therapeutic and Enjoyable Playgrounds (STEP) for children in overseas developing countries and Hong Kong, and how he started and continued this dream with his fellows during and after his time at PolyU with Uni-Y.
After Jack’s inspiring sharing, Prof. Chan facilitated the Q&A session. Prof. Ben Young, Vice President (Student and Global Affairs), presented a souvenir to Jack as a token of thanks to conclude the talk.
STARS Residential College Orientation Programme
The Special Talents Admission and Recognition Scheme (STARS) Residential College Orientation Programme was successfully held on 5 September 2022 in the PolyU Student Halls of Residence (Homantin).
PolyU Orientation 2022 - Navigate Your Future
To kick-start the new academic year of 2022/23, the Student Affairs Office hosted its orientation programme – “Navigate Your Future: Orientation 2022” on 26 August 2022.
Various students, student bodies, departments and offices participated in this orientation with physical booths in the Shaw Sports Complex and hybrid briefing sessions at the Global Student Hub.
The Orientation Showcase provided a valuable opportunity for students to explore a wide range of student developmental opportunities and services at PolyU. They learned about PolyU’s support services, holistic student development programmes and student activities, and the interaction and lively communication with staff and senior students helped inspire them to make a positive start to their new exciting journey at PolyU.
The Orientation Showcase also helped bring excitement and energy to the PolyU campus at the start of the 2022/23 academic year.

The Outstanding Student Awards Presentation Ceremony 2021
The Outstanding Student Awards Presentation Ceremony 2021 was held online on 21 April 2022. A total of 28 final-year students who excel in both academic and non-academic pursuits during their studies are selected as PolyU’s outstanding students at departmental, faculty/ School, and university levels. Congratulations to Miss Ho Hiu Man from the Faculty of Humanities, who has won The Most Outstanding PolyU Student of the Year.
Understanding the GBA through Understanding HKSAR and Mainland China
The Dean of Students Talk “Understanding the GBA through Understanding HKSAR and Mainland China” was held online on 23 February 2020, attended by over 200 PolyU students and staff. Our honourable speaker, Mr David Lee, presented numerous informative data on the Greater Bay Area, and shared his own valuable and unique experience in working at the GBA and Mainland China.
First-ever collaborative talk series with Chinese Mainland Students’ Association on scam
To step up combating actions against deception and enhance university students’ awareness of various kinds of deception and scams, SAO and the Chinese Mainland Students’ Association (中國內地學生協會) jointly initiated a collaborative talk series and co-organised the first talk at the beginning of Semester 2 on 14 January 2022.
