Reasons for Pursuing a Doctorate Programme

My motivation for pursuing a Doctorate Programme stems from a combination of personal aspiration, professional development, and a long-term commitment to advancing knowledge in the integrated resort (IR) and construction development fields. After more than a decade of experience in cost control, contracts, and project execution within large-scale developments, I have progressively shifted from a technical quantity surveying mindset to a broader strategic perspective. This evolution inspired me to pursue advanced academic training that would strengthen my ability to contribute to industry innovation and policy discussions.

The doctoral journey allows me to deepen my expertise in areas such as urban planning, development economics, customer behaviour, and infrastructure strategy — all of which are essential to the future competitiveness of IR destinations in East and Southeast Asia. Furthermore, conducting rigorous academic research offers the opportunity to analyse issues that are not only relevant to my organisation but also critical to the long-term development of Macau and other regional tourism economies. Ultimately, I seek to bridge industry practice with academic evidence, helping inform decisions that shape sustainable, resilient, and globally competitive integrated resort ecosystems.

Why do you choose PolyU DIREC Programme

I chose the PolyU Doctor of International Real Estate and Construction (DIREC) Programme because it uniquely aligns with my academic interests, professional background, and long‑term goals. Unlike traditional PhD programmes that focus primarily on theoretical research, DIREC offers a balanced structure that integrates applied research, executive‑level insights, and global real estate perspectives. This enables professionals like myself to investigate complex development problems through both academic and practical lenses.

PolyU’s BRE has a strong reputation in Asia for research excellence, industry relevance, and its innovative approach to real estate and construction education. The programme’s emphasis on international development, asset management, and strategic planning directly supports my research into integrated resort competitiveness across East and Southeast Asia. Additionally, the access to seasoned faculty, industry networks, and regional case studies provides a valuable platform for building impactful, evidence‑based frameworks that address real‑world development challenges.

Overall Learning Experience from Studying DIREC Programme

My learning experience with the DIREC Programme has been academically rigorous, intellectually stimulating, and professionally transformative. The interdisciplinary curriculum broadened my understanding beyond cost and contract management, immersing me in advanced concepts such as urban planning, investment appraisal, IT for construction, and strategic asset positioning.

Through coursework, seminars, and research discussions with faculty and peers, I gained a deeper appreciation of how real estate, tourism infrastructure, and city planning interact within a competitive global environment. The programme also sharpened my analytical and methodological capabilities, particularly in qualitative research design, comparative case study analysis, and policy evaluation — all essential to my doctoral work on integrated resort success factors and city competitiveness.

Beyond academic content, the interaction with fellow professionals from diverse backgrounds enriched my learning experience. Sharing perspectives from different markets and sectors enhanced my ability to view development challenges holistically and helped me identify cross‑regional patterns and opportunities relevant to construction and real estate development.

Outcomes/Expectations from Studying DIREC Programme

The DIREC Programme has had a significant impact on both my personal development and professional direction. It strengthened my strategic thinking, expanded my academic capability, and clarified the direction of my long term professional commitments.

Ultimately, I hope this journey will position me not only as an industry practitioner, but also as a thought leader capable of influencing future development strategies.
