I exemplify the integration of research, innovation, and leadership across the construction, real estate, and technology sectors. With over 30 years of professional experience, I have contributed extensively to advancing safety, digital transformation, and sustainable development within the built environment.

Before assuming my current position as Associate Director (Business Analytics) at the Logistics and Supply Chain MultiTech R&D Centre (LSCM), I held senior management roles in the construction technology field, where I led strategic initiatives in automation and digital innovation. My work reflects a strong commitment to applying research to enhance industry performance and cross‑disciplinary collaboration.

My doctoral research on construction safety earned multiple honours, including the Outstanding Safety Practitioner (Inspiring Woman in Safety) 2025, the Best Project Scholarship 2024, and awards from the HKIE and the OSHC. The study was also selected for PolyU’s Outstanding Works by Students (OWS) exhibition. The qualification further enabled me to contribute to academic teaching as a Part‑time Lecturer in PolyU’s Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and Building and Real Estate (BRE), fostering knowledge exchange between academia and industry.

Reasons for Pursuing a Doctorate Programme

Lifelong learning has been a guiding principle in my professional journey. After decades of experience in the construction industry, I pursued the Doctor of International Real Estate and Construction (DIREC) to enhance my analytical capabilities and deepen my understanding of real estate, sustainability, and innovation.

My prior studies emphasised construction management and urban planning, but I sought to develop stronger research skills and an academic foundation to approach complex industry issues from a broader, evidence‑based perspective. The structured research framework of DIREC expanded my ability to interpret data, evaluate emerging technologies, and identify strategies that drive industry improvement.

The doctoral experience also nurtured a research‑and‑development mindset, enabling me to apply innovative thinking and methodological rigour in my later professional roles. It has proved invaluable in helping me navigate an increasingly technology‑driven and fast‑changing global environment while shaping my ongoing contributions to safety, digital transformation, and industrial research.

Why do you choose PolyU DIREC Programme

I selected the DIREC programme at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University for its distinctive integration of real estate and construction disciplines within a professionally oriented doctoral framework. As a PolyU alumna, I deeply value its reputation for academic excellence, research relevance, and strong industry engagement.

The programme’s comprehensive curriculum—encompassing strategic management, innovation, data analytics, and urban economics—aligned closely with my career interests and future aspirations. Its balance of theoretical depth and practical application provided an ideal platform to strengthen leadership and research competence.

The interaction with experienced faculty members and accomplished peers encouraged critical reflection on global trends, technological transformation, and sustainable development. The cross‑disciplinary approach of DIREC also guided the evolution of my later work in technology‑based innovation and industry research, reinforcing my commitment to advancing the built environment through knowledge‑driven practice.

Outcomes/Expectations from Studying DIREC Programme

The DIREC programme was intellectually enriching and professionally transformative. It significantly improved my ability to conduct applied research and to translate findings into effective industry solutions. My doctorate on construction safety produced actionable insights that contributed to policy and practice improvements and earned several distinguished awards.

More broadly, the programme developed my analytical and leadership skills and strengthened my capacity to address multifaceted challenges across the construction and real estate sectors. It also established a valuable professional network of peers and mentors who continuously inspire collaborative learning and innovation.

The qualification directly supported my advancement into senior R&D and analytics roles, where I apply research principles to drive digital and operational transformation. Additionally, it allowed me to contribute to education as a Part‑time Lecturer in PolyU’s CEE and BRE Departments—encouraging knowledge transfer and promoting a culture of safety and innovation among future professionals.

Advice for Prospective Candidates

The DIREC programme provides an exceptional opportunity for experienced professionals to advance their academic, strategic, and leadership capabilities. It demands intellectual discipline and curiosity but rewards participants with new insights and perspectives that enhance both professional growth and industry contribution.

I encourage prospective candidates to approach the programme with openness, perseverance, and a willingness to engage deeply with research. The curriculum equips learners to integrate knowledge from multiple disciplines, apply evidence‑based solutions, and address contemporary challenges in a complex global environment.

Beyond academic achievement, DIREC fosters a professional network grounded in collaboration and lifelong learning. The skills and perspectives gained extend well beyond the classroom—supporting leadership in innovation, technology, and sustainability. For professionals determined to make meaningful contributions to the construction and real estate sectors, the DIREC journey offers transformative value.
