Salute female engineers for making great additions to the world of construction!
Given a shout-out by South China Morning Post on 13 July 2019, Ms Phyllis Chen Fai Wing, a graduate of our Building Engineering and Management Programme in 2003, is currently a project manager in Gammon Construction Limited. To Phyllis, the construction sector is a place offering so much more than a job. It fully realized her potential and offered her rewarding
opportunities.
After the well-rounded and professional training in our Department, unfolding this challenging and enjoyable adventure over a decade ago,Phyllis started off with a post of graduate engineer in a small firm and continued to pick up her expertise in engineering from assistant engineer to project manager in Gammon Construction. In 2010, in recognition of her achievement, Phyllis was selected as ‘The Best Graduate Candidate under Scheme A Training in the Professional Assessment for Corporate Membership of Building Discipline’ by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).
In sharp contrast to a traditional saying that the construction industry is a world of male, Phyllis finds the site work challenging, inspiring and enjoyable as well as her dedication is greatly appreciated. The truth is that like a breath of fresh air, female engineers with greater tolerance can soften tensions and empower on-site workers to reach higher productivity. The emergence of shining and passionate women engineers further elevated the construction sector to new heights.
Our ‘BSc (Hons) Programme in Building Engineering and Management (BEM)’ provides professional education and practical training for students pursuing proficiency in sustainable construction and management. The programme is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB),the UK, the Hong Kong Institute of Construction Managers (HKICM) and HKIE.The average starting salary of our 2018 BEM graduates was about HK$22,500-per month. Our graduates take up positions in major
international construction companies, international construction consultancies, engineering contractors, property developers and public corporations, etc. Also, outstanding applicants have the chance of receiving an entry scholarship of HK$10,000-.
