Messages from Students of MSc in Sports Technology and Management

I have greatly benefited from the excellent teaching and research environment here. The programme is carefully designed to integrate theory with practice, with a strong emphasis on biomechanics, rehabilitation, and sports technology applications in both clinical and sports settings. This “learn to apply” philosophy, together with the academic atmosphere at PolyU, has left a deep impression on me and is something I highly appreciate.

 

In terms of experimental and research experience, PolyU has invested substantially in facilities related to biomechanics and human movement analysis. Our biomechanics and motion analysis laboratories are equipped with advanced systems such as three-dimensional optical motion capture systems based on reflective markers (e.g. Vicon), which use multiple infrared cameras to track the three-dimensional trajectories of joint markers and reconstruct precise kinematic parameters. In addition, wearable Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) systems are available for measuring accelerations and angular velocities in both laboratory and field environments, allowing us to analyse running gait, locomotion, and various sport techniques in detail. These are complemented by force plates, plantar pressure measurement systems, and instrumented treadmills, which provide ground reaction forces, pressure distribution, and spatiotemporal gait parameters, giving us a comprehensive picture of movement in both kinematic and kinetic terms.

 

With the support of these facilities, I have been actively involved in several projects related to running and sports performance. For example, I have participated in studies using instrumented treadmills and three-dimensional motion capture to record running gait, while simultaneously collecting kinematic data from IMUs. The data are then processed and analysed with statistical software to explore how different movement strategies and parameters may influence performance and injury risk. These experiences have given me substantial training in experimental design, equipment operation, data processing, and interpretation of biomechanical results, and have made my learning journey at PolyU very rich and fulfilling.

 

Outside the classroom, I maintain regular training in running and golf. These activities are not only personal interests, but also provide real-world contexts in which I can apply what I have learned about sports biomechanics and performance analysis. By combining motion analysis technologies with my own training, I have deepened my understanding of how theoretical concepts relate to actual movement patterns and performance.

 

Overall, studying and living at PolyU in the BME-related area has been both challenging and rewarding. Balancing coursework, laboratory work, and group projects has helped me develop strong time management, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. I truly value the comprehensive education and research training that PolyU provides, and I look forward to applying the biomechanics and sports technology knowledge I have gained here to future work in sports science and biomedical engineering.
