Director of Research Postgraduate Studies and Associate Professor

Neural Engineering for the Benefit of Mankind

Biography

Prof. Hu Xiaoling is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Prof. Hu’s team is a leading group in designing hybrid robots for Automation in stroke rehabilitation. They invented the technology integrating neuromuscular electrical stimulation and robot (NMES-robot) in one system for more effective neural rehabilitation after stroke. The technology has been implemented into a series of robotic systems, from rigid exoskeletons to soft exosuits, for persons with different needs after stroke, e.g., Rehabilitation Sleeve and Mobile Exoneuromusculoskeletons (ENMS) for the upper- and lower-limbs in self-help telerehabilitation. These invented systems received prestigious awards and public recognitions. They have been commercialized by the startups of Prof. Hu's team in Hong Kong and Mainland China for rehabilitation services in the healthcare industry. The upper-limb ENMS is a registered Class II medical device in China and has been recognized by Coherent Market Insights as one of the five key innovations shaping the global rehabilitation robotics market. The lower-limb ENMS is recognized as a trending-now technology in the global market by States Kings Research.
