Professor Nanguang CHEN

Professor

Optical device innovation and deep learning for precision medicine

Biography

Prof. Chen received his BEng in Electromagnetic Measurement and Instrumentation from Hunan University in 1988, MSc in Theoretical Physic from Peking University in 1994, and PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2000. He joined the University of Connecticut in 2000, firstly as a postdoctoral research fellow and subsequentially as an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Prof. Chen became an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the National University of Singapore in 2004. He was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2011.

Research Overview

Prof. Chen has been an active researcher in the field of biomedical optics. He has contributed to the fundamental theory of light propagation in turbid media, including the boundary conditions for the diffusion equation and pulse propagation models. He also investigated numerous new approaches for imaging deeper and faster in biological tissues with low energy light. His inventions include spread spectrum time-resolved optical spectroscopy/imaging, focal modulation microscopy, and slanted lightsheet microscopy. Prof. Chen has extensive experience in working with physicians for clinical researches in the US, Singapore, and China.
