Overseas/Mainland Attachment Programme

Despite the challenging circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was fortunate to participate in a two-week internship at an Ottobock patient care facility in 2022. This internship allowed me to gain hands- on experience and learn from experts in the field of prosthetics and orthotics. Attending patient assessments, observing the fitting and fabrication processes, and assisting in the provision of devices were some of the highlights.

Before starting the internship, I set various learning objectives, including enhancing my knowledge of prosthetic and orthotic devices, developing practical skills in patient assessment and device fitting, and understanding the challenges in resource-limited settings. The preparation process was memorable, involving careful planning of my journey and rearranging accommodation after encountering unexpected issues. However, the warm hospitality and support I received upon arrival in Manila made me feel welcomed and supported.

The clinic I visited in Manila is renowned for its comprehensive rehabilitation services for individuals with limb loss or disability. This overseas attachment provided me with invaluable insights, enhancing my empathy, communication skills and cultural sensitivity, which are all crucial in patient-centred care. Furthermore, witnessing the dedication and resourcefulness of the clinic's staff inspired me to explore innovative solutions within my own practice. I acquired knowledge of different prosthetic and orthotic devices, fabrication techniques and patient assessment methods, equipping me with practical skills for future endeavours. Manila's clinic demonstrated innovative approaches and technologies that could serve as valuable lessons for Hong Kong. The use of locally sourced materials and collaboration with universities, NGOs and the government ensured accessibility and affordability for patients. These lessons can help Hong Kong create a more inclusive environment for individuals in need.

In conclusion, the overseas attachment in Manila provided me with invaluable clinical exposure, cultural immersion and exposure to innovation and technology. This experience enriched my knowledge, skills and perspective on providing prosthetic and orthotic services. I am grateful for this opportunity and eager to make a positive impact in my future studies and career.

Local Internship Programme

During my Local Internship Programme, I shadowed clinical educators at the Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics in public hospitals, actively participating in patient assessments, fabrication and overall patient care. Exposed to a diverse range of cases, I developed a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in providing personalised solutions for patients' unique requirements. I honed my technical and communication skills, recognising the importance of holistic care.

Further, the internship provided opportunities to explore the application of innovation and technology in prosthetics and orthotics. Working with state-of-the-art equipment and technologies, such as 3D scanning and computer-aided design (CAD) software, enabled me to gain hands-on experience in the implementation of innovative solutions. Witnessing the integration of innovation and technology in clinical practice reinforced my belief in their transformative potential. Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams highlighted the importance of a patient-centred and holistic approach. The experience nurtured my passion for integrating innovation and technology into prosthetics and orthotics, leading me to seek additional learning opportunities and engage in independent projects.

To conclude, the Local Internship Programme provided me with valuable exposure to prosthetics and orthotics, inspiring my studies and fuelling my interest in integrating innovation and technology into patient care. The hands-on experience and interdisciplinary collaboration reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career that improves the lives of individuals with limb loss or disabilities. I am grateful for the opportunities and knowledge gained through this internship, which will undoubtedly shape my future contributions.

Mentorship Programme

My mentorship experience with Professor Li Wen Jung, Chair Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at City University of Hong Kong, has been incredibly valuable and inspiring. Throughout the Mentorship Programme, my mentor provided valuable advice on post-graduate studies and career opportunities, extending beyond academia. His practical and kind guidance created a supportive environment for me to seek advice. I learnt a great deal from his expertise, gaining a clearer understanding of engineering development and the importance of interdisciplinary knowledge. He advised me on pursuing a master's degree or a doctorate and emphasised aligning academic pursuits with personal interests and career goals. Professor Li went above and beyond by connecting me with an experienced product designer, which helped me understand the intersection between engineering and healthcare. His own story and journey in mechanical engineering inspired resilience and determination in me. The Mentorship Programme fostered a supportive relationship, building my confidence and self-belief as I navigate my academic and professional journey. Overall, the mentorship has shaped my aspirations and refined my understanding of the possibilities within mechanical engineering.

Service Project Programme

I organised an online workshop for primary school students, introducing them to prosthetics and orthotics through a hands- on experience. I explained the role of prosthetists/orthotists and showcased real-life examples to engage and inspire the students. A practical activity allowed them to create crafts using thermoplastic material, understanding its properties and applications in orthotics. Interactive tools like visuals, videos and quizzes were incorporated to enhance the workshop's success and facilitate better understanding.

Through this project, I developed skills in presenting complex information to young audiences and witnessed the enthusiasm and curiosity of the students. It reinforced the importance of providing educational opportunities and nurturing interest in prosthetics and orthotics. This initiative sparked ideas for future contributions, raising awareness and exploring the intersection of innovation, technology and healthcare. I aim to collaborate with professionals, develop novel solutions and make a positive impact in the field. The workshop offered a platform to introduce primary school students to prosthetics and orthotics, combining informative presentations with hands-on activities, fostering curiosity and inspiring young minds.

Overall Evaluation

The Scholarship greatly supported me financially, enabling me to focus on my studies and seize learning opportunities. Overseas attachments, mentorship, service projects and internships broadened my perspective and enhanced my skills. My goal is to excel in innovation and technology, and the Scholarship fuelled my passion in this field. To prospective participants, I advise igniting your passion, seeking mentorship, engaging in activities and staying curious. I'm grateful to the Scholarship secretariat and staff, as well as the university staff. Interacting with other awardees formed enriching friendships and expanded my network. I'm thankful for the Scholarship's impact on my life and future aspirations.
