Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

We equip graduates with the technical and academic skills necessary to excel in the areas of building sciences and building services engineering.

This programme addresses the demand for locally trained building services engineers with expertise in consultancy, contracting, building management, and research and development.

Our graduates possess a broad range of personal skills, including effective communication, critical thinking, independent learning, and innovative problem-solving.

Programme Characteristics

Students learn the art and science of providing safe, healthy, and energy-efficient built environments with minimal adverse ecological impacts. They are presented with intellectual challenges that prepare them to become industry leaders.

Our students have the opportunity to work in teams, lead small projects, and engage in independent study while collaborating with highly qualified professional staff. They also have access to various types of design software and laboratory facilities equipped with the latest building science and engineering applications, such as artificial intelligence and big data for smart buildings.

We offer local and international summer placement opportunities, and students participating in our Student Exchange Programme can study for a semester at partner universities in the United States, Europe, Australia, Russia, Southeast Asia, or Chinese Mainland.

Our students frequently receive scholarships from professional bodies and major organisations in Hong Kong.

Recognition & Prospects

Professional Recognition

The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) has granted full accreditation to the BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering.

Graduates of this programme may qualify for Scheme A training with the HKIE in the following disciplines: (i) Building Services, (ii) Fire, (iii) Environmental*, and (iv) Energy. The HKIE-accredited academic programmes in the Building Services discipline are reciprocally recognised by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) in the UK.

* Upon completion of specific elective subjects.

Career Prospects

Graduates of this programme have good career prospects in the building construction and real estate sectors.

The rapid construction of new state-of-the-art buildings in Hong Kong has provided numerous attractive, local employment opportunities. The programme’s wide recognition has expanded these opportunities to Chinese Mainland and overseas.

Graduates often begin their careers as trainee engineers in government departments, consulting firms, contracting companies, property management companies, and utility companies.

First-class Honours graduates may also find research as an attractive option because the field of building development in Hong Kong has embraced advanced technologies that warrant of in-depth investigation.

Curriculum

Students are admitted to the Senior Year of the 4-year degree programme. The total credits requirement for the senior year curriculum is 68 academic credits plus 3 training credits.

Students are required to take 44 credits for compulsory subjects and 15 credits for elective subjects.

Students are considered for credit transfers based on their previous academic performance in AD/HD programmes. Students not meeting the equivalent standard of the undergraduate degree Language Communication Requirements (LCR) will be required to take degree LCR subjects.

In Year One, students apply their foundational knowledge to the design and operation of major building services engineering systems. In the Final Year, students choose electives from a pool of courses that address the latest developments and technology in the fields of building sciences and engineering, and they also undertake a major project.

Credit Required for Graduation

Student Message

Reflecting on my years at PolyU BEEE, I am grateful for the diverse learning environment and opportunities provided by the department. Throughout my studies, I have developed a solid foundation in building services engineering and sustainable green technologies. One of the major highlights was participating in the Work‑Integrated Education (WIE) programme, which allowed me to gain valuable hands‑on experience and understand my future professional working environment long before graduation.

This invaluable experience has equipped me with both the engineering expertise and innovative mindset needed to tackle real-life challenges. As I graduate, I feel confident and fully prepared to step into the industry.

LAM Chak Ming

I am grateful for my time at PolyU because it has shaped me both academically and personally. My studies not only gave me a solid foundation in building services engineering, but also changed the way I approach problems. I became more independent and better organised, and I also learned how to collaborate effectively as part of a team.

BEEE broadened my understanding of the profession, showing me that building services engineering is not only about conventional building systems but also about responding to global challenges, embracing new technologies, and addressing social needs. This experience has given me a wider perspective and a clearer direction for my future.

WONG Chi Hung

I started with basic mathematics and design concepts. Now, I can create complete designs from nothing. It was challenging, but the hard work strengthened me as an engineer. More importantly, it taught me to view problems from different perspectives— I learned to consider what different stakeholders in a project need and expect.

The department has a mentorship programme that assigns mentors to students. My mentor was an experienced engineer who guided me step by step. He helped me learn how to think and solve problems the right way.

I also really enjoyed the internship. It gave me hands-on experience before I even graduated. It helped me understand the professional culture of engineering—something you simply can't learn from textbooks.
