Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

Management skills are required by all business professionals. As an area of study, management is concerned with how to get the best out of people and other resources.

This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education and training in general management, along with an opportunity to specialise in human resource management (HRM). Students are equipped with a wide range of management skills to give them the potential to develop as business leaders in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and the region.

Characteristics

Management is a lively and interesting subject to study. Our programme emphasises the development of academic and professional knowledge and practical skills in general management and human resource management, including communication and presentation, leadership and teamwork, problem solving and the effective use of information technology.

The programme offers a wide range of subject choices in the fields of general management and human resource management, such as Entrepreneurship, Global Business Management, Business Negotiation, E-commerce for Management, Contemporary Issues in Management Information Systems, International Human Resource Management, Employee Relations, Reward and Performance Management, Staffing & Selection and Training & Development. Students can choose subjects within the HRM concentration to obtain recognition by professional bodies.

There is a strong emphasis on interactive and student-centred learning methods, including case studies, role playing and simulation exercises. Visits to companies and other organisations are arranged, and practitioners are invited as guest speakers to share their practical experience with students.

All students within the Faculty of Business are encouraged to participate in the Whole Person Development Programme (WPDP), which includes a range of extracurricular activities such as leadership training camps, peer tutoring, mentorship and overseas and the Chinese mainland exchanges. Each student is assigned a professional mentor who is an experienced executive or manager in the business world and who provides advice and support and helps students to plan their careers and prepare for their first jobs after graduation.

Subject to availability, BBA students can spend a semester studying at another university overseas or in the Chinese mainland and have the credits counted towards their PolyU degree.

The Department has also developed opportunities for students to work in firms during either the spring semester or in the summer in Hong Kong or the Chinese mainland to fulfil 100 hours (3 training credit) of Work-Integrated Education (WIE) requirement. These, and other forms of work experience, can count towards the WIE requirement.

Student Message

"Let the unknown be known". In line with this, apart from academic learning in the classroom, PolyU strongly encourages students to learn through hands-on experiences, including various opportunities for competitions, internships, and other non-academic activities. These chances allow us to see beyond the concepts and the books and work with them. This helps an individual grow and, in turn, pushes us towards a self-improvement mindset that helps us chase our dreams.

Taking the Service-Learning subject as an example, I participated in building a project from scratch to implementation. Beyond teamwork, collaboration with students from other programmes and external organisations, such as government education departments and local colleges, guided me to step out of my comfort zone by facing dynamic and complex real-world situations. Overcoming the challenges, I gained invaluable experience and insights that have shaped me as a professional and prepared me for my future career.

Reflecting on my two years at PolyU, I would describe it as a delicious cup of coffee. Although the first taste of coffee is bitter, the mellowness and energy that follow make it a remarkable memory.

Lung Ho Ying

My third and fourth years at Poly U provided valuable preparation for the business workplace. The curriculum, with courses such as CAR (Eng), Workplace English for Business, and Chinese Language Communication for Business, fostered effective communication skills crucial to professional success. Beyond the classroom, the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) and Service Learning programmes offered practical opportunities to develop essential skills such as time management, conflict resolution, teamwork, and adaptability. These experiences were instrumental in shaping my readiness for a future career.

Group projects and presentations were a significant part of my studies, allowing me to develop leadership skills. I learned that well-organised communication is paramount when collaborating with others. Unclear or disorganised communication can lead to misunderstandings and biases, hindering project progress and lowering overall efficiency. I also came to appreciate the importance of feedback from both groupmates and tutors. This feedback loop enabled me to iteratively improve my work, ultimately leading to higher quality outcomes. The ability to receive and act upon constructive criticism is a skill I believe will be invaluable in my future career.

Chan Ki Yiu

Reflecting on my graduation from PolyU with a BBA (Hons) in Management, I am grateful for the exceptional education and personal growth opportunities I received. PolyU has not only equipped me with essential academic knowledge but also provided me with practical skills and valuable life lessons.

I found the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) programme particularly beneficial, as it provided me with invaluable work-based learning experiences highly relevant to my future professional development. During my WIE as an Administrative Assistant at BodyVStore Limited, I gained practical experience that will give me a competitive edge in the job market and has prepared me well for the challenges of a real-world work environment.

Participating in extracurricular activities at PolyU has also shaped my character and broadened my horizons. For example, as an Ambassador for the "Limitless" Campaign, I had the opportunity to initiate activities and promote campus integration and inclusion.

PolyU's nurturing environment, along with its passionate professors, has made my university life truly fulfilling. I'm proud to be part of the MM family, where I have found a strong sense of belonging and support. I'm excited to carry the lessons and memories from PolyU into the next chapter of my life; I am ready to take on whatever challenges the future may hold.

CHAN Wing Lam

Studying for the BBA Management Programme has been most fruitful. PolyU has provided me with a valuable opportunity to grow. The knowledge and skills learnt at PolyU can be applied to my internship and career. The learning culture at PolyU has motivated me to keep learning and develop my strengths.

Thanks to Work-Integrated Education, I stepped out of my comfort zone and was exposed to the job market. I joined Ernst & Young as a campus recruitment team intern. It widened my horizons and broadened my global perspective on working in a culturally diverse organisation. This is a valuable opportunity for me to explore career possibilities and understand what fits me best.

PolyU encourages students not only to focus on academic aspects but also to emphasise personal development. The BBA Management programme has made me a well-rounded graduate with extensive experience that will help me stand out in the job market.
