Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

Management skills are required by all business professionals. As an area of study, management is concerned with how to get the best out of people and other resources.

This programme provides students with a well-rounded business education and training in general management, along with an opportunity to specialise in human resource management (HRM). Students are equipped with a wide range of management skills to give them the potential to develop as business leaders in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and the region.

Characteristics

Management is a lively and interesting subject to study. Our programme emphasises the development of academic and professional knowledge and practical skills in general management and human resource management, including communication and presentation, leadership and teamwork, problem solving and the effective use of information technology.

The programme offers a wide range of subject choices in the fields of general management and human resource management, such as Entrepreneurship, Global Business Management, Business Negotiation, E-commerce for Management, Contemporary Issues in Management Information Systems, International Human Resource Management, Employee Relations, Reward and Performance Management, Staffing & Selection and Training & Development. Students can choose subjects within the HRM concentration to obtain recognition by professional bodies.

There is a strong emphasis on interactive and student-centred learning methods, including case studies, role playing and simulation exercises. Visits to companies and other organisations are arranged, and practitioners are invited as guest speakers to share their practical experience with students.

All students within the Faculty of Business are encouraged to participate in the Whole Person Development Programme (WPDP), which includes a range of extracurricular activities such as leadership training camps, peer tutoring, mentorship and overseas and the Chinese mainland exchanges. Each student is assigned a professional mentor who is an experienced executive or manager in the business world and who provides advice and support and helps students to plan their careers and prepare for their first jobs after graduation.

Subject to availability, BBA students can spend a semester studying at another university overseas or in the Chinese mainland and have the credits counted towards their PolyU degree.

The Department has also developed opportunities for students to work in firms during either the spring semester or in the summer in Hong Kong or the Chinese mainland to fulfil 100 hours (3 training credit) of Work-Integrated Education (WIE) requirement. These, and other forms of work experience, can count towards the WIE requirement.

Student Message

My third and fourth years at Poly U provided valuable preparation for the business workplace. The curriculum, with courses like CAR(Eng), Workplace English for Business, and Chinese Language Communication for Business, fostered effective communication skills crucial for professional success. Beyond the classroom, the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) and Service Learning programmes offered practical opportunities to develop essential skills such as time management, conflict resolution, teamwork, and adaptability. These experiences were instrumental in shaping my readiness for a future career.

Group projects and presentations were a significant part of my studies, allowing me to develop leadership skills. I learned that well-organized communication is paramount when collaborating with others. Unclear or disorganized communication can lead to misunderstandings and biases, hindering project progress and lowering overall efficiency. I also came to appreciate the importance of feedback from both groupmates and tutors. This feedback loop enabled me to iteratively improve my work, ultimately leading to higher quality outcomes. The ability to receive and act upon constructive criticism is a skill I believe will be invaluable in my future career.

Chan Ki Yiu

Reflecting upon my graduation from PolyU with a BBA (Hons) in Management, I am grateful for the exceptional education and personal growth opportunities I have received from this institution. PolyU has not only equipped me with essential academic knowledge but also provided me with practical skills and valuable life lessons.

I found the Work-Integrated Education (WIE) programme to be particularly beneficial, as it provided me with invaluable work-based learning experiences that were highly relevant to my future professional development. During my WIE as an Administrative Assistant at BodyVStore Limited, I gained practical experiences that have given me a competitive edge in the job market and prepared me well for the challenges of a real-world work environment.

Participating in extracurricular activities at PolyU has also shaped my character and broadened my horizons. For example, as an Ambassador for the "Limitless" Campaign, I had the chance to initiate activities and promote campus integration and inclusion.

PolyU's nurturing environment, along with its passionate professors, has made my university life truly fulfilling. I'm proud to be part of the MM family, where I have found a strong sense of belonging and support. I'm excited to carry the lessons and memories from PolyU into the next chapter of my life; I am ready to take on whatever challenges the future may hold.

CHAN Wing Lam

Studying for the BBA Management Programme has been most fruitful. PolyU has provided a valuable opportunity for me to grow. Knowledge and skills learnt from PolyU can be applied to my internship and career. The learning culture at PolyU has motivated me to keep learning and develop my strengths.

Thanks to Work-Integrated-Education, I stepped out of my comfort zone and was exposed to the job market. I joined Ernst & Young as a campus recruitment team intern. It widened my horizons and broadened my global vision of working in an organisation with cultural diversity. This is a valuable chance for me to explore the possibilities in my career and understand what fits me the most.

PolyU encourages students not only to focus on academic aspects but also to emphasise the importance of personal development. The BBA Management programme has made me a well-rounded graduate with numerous experiences to stand out in the job market.

MUNG Nga Yee

My two years at PolyU equipped me with a solid academic foundation and prepared me to tackle future challenges with a positive attitude.

Studying at PolyU not only strengthened my knowledge of management and business but also enhanced my interpersonal skills by giving me the chance to collaborate with others on various projects and through a range of activities.

Practical assignments and research projects allowed me to apply the theories I had learned in real-life situations. PolyU encourages students to participate in activities outside the classroom to achieve their personal development goals. Through the Work-Integrated Education programme, I gained meaningful work experience and explored potential career paths in the retail industry. The Service-Learning programme gave me the opportunity to contribute to the community by conducting a social project.

Further, the MM Department held a series of workshops and seminars to help us prepare for job interviews and further studies. These activities all cultivated my professionalism and enhanced my soft skills for future career development.

NGAI Kwan Kei

As a senior entry student studying for the BBA in Management, I had a fruitful and joyful university life at PolyU, despite the COVID pandemic. The programme provided me with a great opportunity to gain all-around knowledge to be an entry-level professional by fulfilling a variety of learning outcomes.

During the lessons, apart from learning concepts and theories, professors provided many opportunities for us to gain up-to-date information on the real business environment by inviting guest speakers with rich industry experience. To apply this knowledge, the Work-Integrated-Education (WIE), a compulsory internship programme for all PolyU full-time students, helped me identify my career path and discover my interests in industry.

Additionally, the MM department organised activities to enhance our learning experiences, such as class representatives' meetings and tea gatherings for us to share our experiences and challenges during university life with professors, who provided supportive and useful advice. The department also provided workshops and internship opportunities for us to join, such as a LinkedIn workshop to learn how to set up a LinkedIn profile effectively and an internship opportunity as a Google Ads and digital marketing volunteer editor, supervised by professionals from Google.

After two years of challenging and meaningful university life, I am well-prepared for my future career and ready to take on new challenges.

SIM Wai Shan

Studying at PolyU gave me numerous opportunities to develop all-round knowledge and apply this to real-life situations. This bridged the gap between classroom learning and the workplace setting, helping me to prepare for the world of work and boosting my confidence.

Take Work-Integrated Education (WIE) as an example. This offers students invaluable work experience through direct participation in the business sector. I worked in the human resources department of a charitable organisation in Hong Kong. I was initially unsure whether I would be suited to the role, but the experience helped me understand and engage in daily business operations and acquire and reinforce related knowledge and skills.

Combining comprehensive learning with real-life experience, the MM programme prepares students to excel in the workplace. Self-assessment and feedback tools allow students to take ownership of their own learning, supported by well-designed courses. Teachers are always willing to assist with academic matters and career planning.
