Programme Aims

The MSc in Rehabilitation Sciences is designed to meet the needs of professionals who wish to specialise and enrich their knowledge and practice in the area of rehabilitation. The aim of this programme of study is to enhance students’ in-depth understanding of different practices in rehabilitation, thus enriching their knowledge in the field of rehabilitation.

 

The aims of the programme are:

  • ​to equip students with advanced knowledge and skills in the area of rehabilitation, enabling them to meet the changing needs of rehabilitation practice and contribute to the development of the rehabilitation specialty;

  • to equip students with the lifelong ability to critically analyse and evaluate ongoing practice so that the quality of professional practice can be advanced and ensured; and

  • to develop knowledge and skills in areas of specialisation relevant to the professional discipline, to improve professional competence.

 

Characteristics

The award includes a required component of scientific research and its application (9 credits) along with 15 credits in the field of rehabilitation. Clinical practicum is not required. Students can choose any available subjects offered by the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences as Core Subjects. The Elective Subjects can be selected from other programmes that are of relevance to the field of study in rehabilitation. The student, along with his/her supervisor, can develop his/her own programme of study that is tailor-made to his/her personal and vocational needs.

 

Please note this programme does not confer eligibility for registration with the Physiotherapist Board of Hong Kong or Occupational Therapists Board of Hong Kong.

Curriculum

Programme Structure

The programme is operated in both full-time and part-time modes. It normally takes 1 year to complete in full-time mode and 2.5 years to complete in part-time mode.

 

Students must complete 2 Compulsory Subjects, Research Methods & Data Analysis and Project Study, along with 5 Core Subjects and 2 Elective Subjects.

  • Neuro-psychological Rehabilitation

  • Psychosocial Rehabilitation for People with Developmental Disabilities

  • Sensory and Motor Invention for People with Developmental Disabilities

  • Independent Study I/II

  • Brain and Behaviour

  • Psychometric Theories and Practice

  • Advances in Congenital Pathophysiology and Pediatric Rehabilitation

Entrance Requirements
  • ​A Bachelor's degree in rehabilitation-related disciplines (e.g. healthcare, biomedical sciences, exercise sciences, health and well-being, etc.) from PolyU or a recognised institution or the equivalent, preferably with one year of post-qualification work experience in rehabilitation;
    OR

  • ​A professional diploma related to rehabilitation from PolyU or a recognised institution or the equivalent, with two years of work experience and evidence of continuous education over the past two years.

 

If you are not a native speaker of English, and your Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English, you are expected to fulfil the University’s minimum English language requirement for admission purpose. Please refer to the "Admission Requirements" section for details.

 

Individual cases will be considered on their own merit. Applicants may be required to attend interviews or tests to further demonstrate their language proficiency.

Student Message

Throughout my journey in the MSc in Rehabilitation Sciences programme, my understanding of the field has grown remarkably, and I have gained a wealth of professional knowledge. The programme has a comprehensive curriculum. The mandatory research methods and project study courses have endowed me with a robust foundation in scientific research. Furthermore, the programme provides considerable flexibility in choosing core courses. This has allowed me to tailor the curriculum according to my own interests and career goals, helping me to better shape my professional trajectory.

 

I have also had ample opportunities to engage in laboratory research, which has enhanced my research skills and will play a crucial role in my career development. In the future, I will continue engaging in critical thinking and actively updating my knowledge.

 

In conclusion, I am extremely satisfied with and grateful for this programme. I highly recommend the MSc in Rehabilitation Sciences, as it offers a personalised and knowledge-rich experience.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude for and share some reflections on my incredible journey while studying for the MSc in Rehabilitation Sciences at PolyU.

 

During my studies so far, I have accrued a wealth of knowledge covering various aspects of rehabilitation science. From the basic science of rehabilitation therapy and neuroscientific principles to the latest advancements in therapeutic techniques, I have developed a comprehensive understanding of the field. The programme has not only equipped me with knowledge of rehabilitation but also given me diverse opportunities to learn how to conduct scientific research in the field of rehabilitation. Through lectures on research methods and data analysis, project study courses, and laboratory practice, my classmates and I have honed our skills and gained valuable and advanced insights into rehabilitation science.

 

Personally, my journey through this programme has been nothing short of remarkable. The mentors and coordinators who have guided me, and the camaraderie I have enjoyed with my classmates, have created an enriching and supportive environment. Furthermore, as I have immersed myself in the world of academia and dedicated countless hours to my studies, a profound passion for scientific research in the field of rehabilitation science has blossomed within me.

 

In conclusion, I am thrilled to have discovered my passion for research in rehabilitation science this year. The MSc in Rehabilitation Sciences has not only nurtured this passion but also provided me with the tools to pursue my objectives with zeal and excellence. I am delighted to have had the opportunity to embark on this journey at PolyU, knowing that I now have the potential to exert a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals in need.
