Professor Johan F. Hoorn awarded HK$40.89 million from RGC to develop social robots benefiting Hong Kong community

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design ("PolyU Design") is proud to announce Prof. Johan F. Hoorn from both PolyU Design and the Department of Computing, has been awarded the prestigious Research Grants Council (RGC)’s theme-based research scheme funding of HK$40.89 million for his project, "Social Robots with Embedded Large Language Models Releasing Stress among the Hong Kong Population." This Social Robots project aims to create a human-like social robot with embedded large language models for home use. These robots will be personalised to the local culture and individual preferences to offer psychological support to the people of Hong Kong. A vital aspect of the project is developing a new software framework for distributed computing, scalability, and privacy protection, adding to its innovative nature. The long-term goal is to reduce the burden on the formal mental health system in Hong Kong while empowering citizens to better manage their well-being through accessible AI-driven social support. "This innovation will benefit Hong Kong's working population, care professionals, social workers, and AI and robotics developers," Prof. Hoorn said. "Additionally, plans are to establish an online platform for developers focusing on robot and avatar solutions, emphasising the care sector and extending support to other areas such as education, hospitality, and entertainment." The RGC Theme-based Research Scheme Funding, which aims to focus academic research efforts of UGC-funded universities on themes of strategic importance to the long-term development of Hong Kong, provides a significant platform for impactful projects. This achievement is a testament to PolyU Design's considerable role in promoting societal innovation and interdisciplinary research. Prof. Johan F. Hoorn's expertise is in social robotics, computational creativity, AI and design, emotion simulation, epistemics, and data analysis. ISD Capstone Research Project brings a returning partnership with GAC R&D to create innovative intelligent cockpit experience for drivers of tomorrow

The use of electric vehicles and autonomous driving has increased the time spent in-cabin, shifting how people view their cars from "means of transportation" to "mobile environments". The new notion allows designers to create a branded, innovative cockpit experience. Further to this emerging trend, the Intelligent Systems Design (ISD) has brought a returning partnership in the Capstone Research Project with GAC, specifically, the Advanced Design Department of its R&D Center. Working with a special design team within the R&D unit exposes students to various emerging technologies and processes. In turn, the students get to help envision the technology's potential with concepts, prototypes and scenarios. GAC hosted ISD students and faculty at their R&D Center's facilities in Guangzhou and showed them around to see how pioneering technologies and novel materials are used in the concept vehicles. Students presented the initial concepts for the digital cockpit, reimagined the driver's interaction with the car and obtained valuable feedback from supervisors. ISD Capstone Research Project is a unique educational experience that immerses students in scenarios and conversations in cutting-edge and competitive industries. It is also a chance for students to explore the sectors to develop their careers in the future. ISD Capstone Research Project study trip visit Asia's largest flying car maker

After finalising the pairing between student teams and the Capstone Research projects, our Intelligent Systems Design (ISD) students set off to visit the leading manufacturers in the Greater Bay Area. Three teams working with XPENG AEROHT, Asia's largest flying car, conducted a study trip to the manufacturer's test base in Guangzhou. To many students, it was their first in-person experience with flying cars and EVTOLs and seeing ideas flow and people at work in a young, tech-centric EV maker where students shared the contagious positive, can-do spirit. "Seeing a bunch of go-getters chasing their dreams at XPENG is exciting," said student Lisa Chen. "They just succeeded in securing funding from some firms, and everyone is working their tails off to propel the company forward. I hope they all get to see their dreams come true soon! And let's all look forward to the day when the low-altitude economy takes off and blossoms across China!" Students made use of the small interactions with one another during the trip to cross-pollinate new thoughts. "The visit brought us many new inspirations and understandings," said one student. "We had a better chance to exchange inspirations with different group members as we travelled together." Student Mitter Jia concurred, "I think the journey was very cool. We learnt about the development process of XPENG AEROHT through our research at XPENG, and we also identified design points we need to keep exploring in the future!" The specialised, collaborative environment offered by the ISD Capstone Research Project is an excellent starting point for turning students' interest in ISD into an industry-supported project well-positioned for their academic and professional development. Prior to establishing his interior design powerhouse, AB Concept, with his partner in 1999, he strategically acquired valuable experience in design, architecture and development practices. (K11 Musea, Hong Kong, 2019) Ed passionately believes that good interior design revolves around the human experience and that a hospitality designer acts as a cultural partner. By incorporating their own tastes and know-how into interior designs, hospitality designers can create unique experiences that are rooted in local ingredients, such as culture and craftsmanship, thereby enriching the design narrative.  “I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have grown up in Hong Kong, a city with an open-minded appreciation for diverse cultures”, Ed remarked. This upbringing laid a solid foundation for Ed’s curiosity and search for understanding in designing distinctive hospitality experiences that reflect his own artistic language. (MEI LI - Grand Hyatt, Kuwait, 2022) Ed leads a design team with bases in Hong Kong, Taipei, Kyoto, London and Milan that has undertaken top-tier hotel projects spanning different continents, such as the renowned Argo destination bar at the Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong and the captivating W Algarve by W Hotels in the Algarve, Portugal. Other projects include the recently renovated lobby lounge at the Ritz-Carlton Tokyo and the iconic Italian restaurant Paper Moon located in the Raffles London at The Old War Office. The designer is presently involved in the design of the highly anticipated Rosewood Resort in the Red Sea and the Shangri-la Hotel in Kyoto. He also designs products for top luxury brands, such as Poltrona Frau and Tai Ping.   Since 2018, Ed has chosen to reside predominantly in the heart of the mountain forest in Karuizawa, Nagano, Japan, which allows him to focus on the creative aspects of his work and draw inspiration from the ever-changing beauty of nature. Recently, the private house that Ed designed for himself was featured in the New York Times’ T Magazine. 2024 Distinguished Design Alumnus of the Year for Professional Achievement Mr WONG Yuk Po Jacky Founder and CEO, 3omethingchic Groups BA in Design (Fashion with Visual Communication) in 2003   Jacky graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Design (Fashion with Visual Communication) in 2003.
