Environment and Interior Design Students entered the international Asia’s Young Designer Award 2019

Student teams of Environment and Interior Design Year 2 competed for entering the international Asia’s Young Designer Award in Singapore. The groups had different spatial proposals based on their study of the adaption of the local buildings in Tai O Fishing Village in Hong Kong. The Gold winning design titled ‘Narrative Space’ exaggerates the fascinating spatial qualities of the vernacular architecture of local stilt houses to project its very own character and the narrative of the space. The experience of joining the international competition in Singapore supported by our long-standing collaborator Nippon Paint enables the team to exchange ideas and make friends with other contestants from different cultures. 'Narrative Space' - Gold Winners, Asia’s Young Designer Award (HK) LAM Yuet Lai Timothy, WANG Yuanzhi Lesimo, YUEN Siu Faat Bryan Tutor: Michael Chan Mr LAM Yuet Lai Timothy, representing his other groupmates WANG Yuanzhi Lesimo and YUEN Siu Faat Bryan of the Gold Winning team, presented the 'Narrative Space’ project to the judges in the Asia Young Designer Awards International Summit 2019 in March. The teams were presenting their designs in class.   NARRATIVE SPACE Gold Winner, Asia’s Young Designer Award (HK) LAM Yuet Lai Timothy, WANG Yuanzhi Lesimo, YUEN Siu Faat Bryan BA(Hons) in Environment & Interior, Year 2 Tutor: Michael Chan Inspired by the unique environment of the stilt house in Tai O, the “Narrative Space” Design exaggerates the fascinating spatial qualities of the vernacular architecture, to project its very own character and the narrative of the space. Since the first settlement in Tai O 200 years ago, the living style of the early Tai O people inspired a unique building of habitat which stilt houses are built along the waterfront. The construction and evolution of these stilt house reflect the very nature of living traditions as a vernacular architecture in Hong Kong. Amazed by the contradiction between the exterior and interior experience, with all the lighting and texture in the space, the design project challenges to explore the dominance of spatial quality in the existing site. As to appreciate and embrace the unique vernacular architecture.
