Summary
In the past three years, students from the Communication Design discipline (now Information Design), Advertising Design, Product Design and Media Design did three study trips to Japan, visiting the cities of Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, Kamakura, Kawagoe and Kyoto.
During these trips the students visited different companies, organisations, universities, museums and events focusing on various disciplines and global issues; these experiences gave the students the opportunity to be exposed and learn about Typeface Design, Way-Finding, Interior Design, FMCG, Branding and Brand Positioning, Advertising, Events and Experiences, Product Design, Architecture, Digital User Experience Design, Service Design, Social Design, Circular Economy and Multidisciplinary Design; as well as Design Education and Fine Arts.
The students had the opportunity to interact and talk directly with industry leaders, as well as with education professionals. This interdisciplinary approach was aimed to introduce the students to familiar design topics as well as disciplines different to what they are used to, with the purpose of better prepare them for the subjects in year four of their studies, specifically their Internship, the Co-operative Project and the Capstone Final Year Project subjects.
These experiences will have a lasting impact on the students’ development beyond their university studies and will help them to better understand the future of the design industry and the importance of interdisciplinary design present and future.
