Prof. BU Siqi, Member of Otto Poon Charitable Foundation Research Institute for Smart Energy (RISE), Associate Head (Research) and Professor of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, was interviewed by RTHK on its radio programme “Backchat” regarding China’s inaugural flight test of a power-generating kite in Inner Mongolia in November 2025.
Prof. Bu discussed the significant potential of high-altitude wind power kites in advancing China’s renewable energy strategy. The 5,000-square-metre kite, part of a national research project, could generate approximately 20 million kilowatt-hours annually—enough to power more than 10,000 homes. Compared to conventional wind turbines, the kite requires 95% less land and 90% less steel, making installation more cost-effective and environmentally friendly. The reduced land and material usage also allows for alternative land use and minimises environmental impact.
Furthermore, harnessing stronger and more stable high-altitude winds could reduce electricity generation costs by around 30%, potentially providing electricity to consumers at a price lower than traditional wind farms. Prof. Bu emphasised that the kite-based energy system holds tremendous promise for the benefits of Chinese residents and could mark the beginning of a new revolution in wind energy generation.
