Summary
Abstract
Opportunities of functional oxides for applications in electronics and energy applications are huge but quite scarce. The main challenges stem from both intrinsic and extrinsic materials problem, e.g. composition, defect and interface control. Most researchers focus on the exciting materials functionalities but not how to transition these to real-world applications. This talk shows that it is possible to make this transition with new thinking. It looks at some of the reasons for the aforementioned challenges and it demonstrate new materials engineering approaches to overcome them. It then looks at novel methods for localised control of oxygen content in thin films, ways to enhance properties via novel nanostructuring methods, interface engineering, and electrode composition tuning. Recent examples linking these materials engineering approaches to provide performance enhancement of non-volatile memory devices and neuromorphic computing will be given.

Professor of Materials Science and Fellow of Trinity College, University of Cambridge
Judith MacManus-Driscoll is Professor in the Materials Science at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of Trinity College. She is Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies. She has been visiting faculty/staff member at Los Alamos National Lab. for 23 years. She is fellow of the Royal Society of London, the Royal Academy of Engineering, APS, AAAS, MRS, RSC, IOP, IOM3, WES. Her research covers wide ranging oxide thin film engineering for electronic applications. She has many licensed patents, consults widely with industry worldwide, and is involved in three start-ups from her group. She is a strong supporter of women in science/engineering. She has numerous prizes for her work from Materials, Physics, Chemistry and EE societies.
