Summary

While Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) enhances productivity and quality, land scarcity in Hong Kong hinders local manufacturing. Reliance on imported modules results in high costs, delivery uncertainties, and increased carbon emissions. To address these challenges, this project proposes the use of offshore MiC factories built on stable, mobile jack-up platforms.

During this research salon, Prof. LI will present the project’s latest annual progress. By leveraging coastal spaces, these floating factories preserve valuable land resources while minimising transportation time and the risk of component damage. These mobile units can be relocated near construction sites, powered by land-based utilities, and supplied via cost-effective sea routes. Ultimately, this project seeks to develop the technologies necessary for offshore manufacturing to foster local innovation and employment.
