RISUD JRF Final Annual Progress Research Salon: Interlinked Low-carbon Travel and Residential Behaviour: Energy, Climate, Social and Infrastructural Impacts

Household energy use in transport and homes is often studied separately, overlooking how preferences and behaviours connect across daily life. This project aims to develop a data-driven, spatial simulation that links travel choices, home energy use, and technology adoption across diverse households.

In this research salon, Prof. ZHUGE will present the final annual progress of his project. Using an agent-based approach informed by surveys, statistics, and urban-scale data, the study explores how social interactions, neighbourhood contexts, and infrastructure shape decisions such as vehicle choice, commuting mode, and the uptake of smart home or heating technologies. The model will support policy testing for incentives and infrastructure planning. Expected impacts include better estimates of electricity demand and emissions, as well as stronger evidence for low-carbon urban planning, grid investment, and climate mitigation.
