Summary
As the global population ages at an unprecedented pace, supporting the health and functional well-being of older adults has become a shared responsibility across families, communities, and healthcare systems. Chinese Medicine (CM), grounded in the principles of “preventing illness before it arises” (治未病) and “nurturing life” (養生), offers a complementary perspective that aligns with modern strategies for healthy aging and geriatric care. Drawing from centuries of practice and an expanding body of research, CM includes herbal formulations to support organ function, acupuncture for pain, sleep, and emotional balance, and mind–body practices such as Tai Chi and Qigong that enhance stability, reduce falls, and promote physical and mental resilience. While CM shows promise in areas such as mobility, cognitive support, and chronic disease management, current scientific evidence remains mixed, and its clinical value is sometimes viewed as inconclusive or controversial. Strengthening methodological rigor and interdisciplinary collaboration is essential for credible integration into geriatric care.
This presentation will provide an evidence-informed overview of CM’s potential contributions to healthy aging, with emphasis on brain health, pain and mobility, immune resilience, digestion, and sleep and emotional well-being.

He is also interested in promoting the rational applications of Chinese medicine in modern society. During the 40 years of career as a researcher and educator, he has focused his research interest in the discovery of potential pharmaceutical substances from natural sources, including the isolation, structural elucidation, and modification of biologically active substances from medicinal plants, as well as the analysis, quality assurance, and standardization of plant-based preparations. Over 340 scientific papers have been published to his credit in the areas of pharmacognosy, natural products, and Chinese/herbal medicines.
