Master of Science in Language Neuroscience and Neurotechnology

MScLNN

[This programme is offered in the 2027/28 academic year subject to approval.]

All MScLNN students must complete 13 credits of compulsory subjects and 18 credits of elective subjects. Students with focused interest in certain subject topics are recommended to consider the two specialised tracks offered within MScLNN, namely (a) Rider in Language Neuroscience and (b) Rider in Clinical and Assistive Neurotechnology. Student may also choose to pursue both riders or neither.

The subject list is subject to revision. Offering of subjects is subject to the availability of teaching staff and viable enrolment number. Some elective subjects will not be offered every year. The Department has the discretion on the offering semester and class quota, which is limited by classroom capacity.

Credit transfer can be granted for compulsory subjects on a case-by-case basis subject to prior approval.

Two Specialised Riders

To cater to diverse career and academic ambitions, the MScLNN offers two specialized riders, namely (a) Rider in Language Neuroscience and (b) Rider in Clinical and Assistive Neurotechnology. Students who successfully complete the requirement of one or more riders will receive a certificate upon graduation issued by the Department acknowledging the completion of the relevant rider(s). The rider system is independent of the award requirements of MScLNN, therefore students are NOT required to complete any rider for graduating from MScLNN.

In addition to the five compulsory core subjects listed above, students of these two riders are required to complete track-specific elective subjects that fill the gaps in the students' prior knowledge.

(a) Rider in Language Neuroscience
This rider provides students with foundational knowledge in language neuroscience, preparing them to pursue research careers in language neuroscience and neurotechnology. For those with technical backgrounds, it offers the opportunity to integrate skills in programming, AI, and data analysis with insights into human communication, enabling them to develop next‑generation digital tools for language‑specific healthcare and language science.

(b) Rider in Clinical and Assistive Neurotechnology
This rider focuses on translational applications, equipping students with expertise in the application of assistive technologies in speech and language pathology practice. Students learn to leverage assistive neurotechnology, such as neural interfaces, to design, develop, and evaluate innovative assistive and therapeutic tools for clinical healthcare and educational settings.

Students are advised to make their rider decision no later than the last week of Semester 1 as they will take compulsory subjects and some elective subjects in the first semester to fully consider the rider to choose and take more elective subjects required by each rider in Semester 2.
