Phishing attacks are growing increasingly sophisticated. The threats can be in the form of fraudulent messages impersonating senior staff members or painted scenarios that require recipients to take immediate action. As a result of sharing user login credentials or financial information, victims’ accounts can become compromised, or they may suffer financial losses.

Ransomware attacks involve malware being implanted into users’ devices as users might have accepted downloads or clicked links in unsolicited messages. The malware initially stays in hibernate mode, then creeps into users’ file content and encrypts it in the background while users are using their devices in the foreground.

To be vigilant and take necessary precautions are the best ways to protect yourself and the University from these types of attacks. To equip IT support personnel in departments with the knowledge to reduce risks of phishing and ransomware attacks, a webinar for CLOs and Cyber Security Work Group members has been scheduled on 28 April 2023. Participants will know more about their roles in mitigating cyber threats for the PolyU community.  Deployment updates on Microsoft Defender for O365 and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint will also be delivered.
