Chemical Spill Drill 2026

We - Share

Chemical handling is a routine part of laboratory work across PolyU. Accidental chemical spills, if not addressed swiftly and correctly, can pose risks to personnel safety, the environment, and campus operations.

To enhance emergency preparedness and validate established response procedures, the Health and Safety Office (HSO), in collaboration with the Campus Control Centre (CCC), conducted a chemical spill drill at the Chemical Handling Depot (Room U203).

CD01
The exercise simulated a realistic incident at Room U203, where a Technical Support Assistant accidentally dropped a container of 35% hydrochloric acid when transferring it from the floor to a workbench. The scenario was designed to reflect common chemical handling risks and to evaluate the staff’s ability to identify hazards, evacuate safely, report incidents promptly, and initiate appropriate emergency protocols.

Key Highlights of the Drill:

  • Scene assessment by HSO emergency responders to implement effective area control measures
  • Close coordination with CCC to cordon off the affected area and restrict unauthorized access
  • Use of an acid gas detector to assess airborne contaminant
  • Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and Emergency Spill Kit to contain and clean up the chemical spill under controlled conditions.

The drill yielded valuable insights for refining emergency response arrangements, including enhanced PPE doffing procedures to minimize contamination risks and more thorough barricading of access points to reinforce protocols in future drills.

The Chemical Spill Drill 2026 served as an excellent opportunity to bolster emergency preparedness and reinforce best practices in chemical incident management. HSO extends its appreciation to the CCC for their strong cooperation in upholding a safe and secure campus environment.
