A Safe Lifting Operation at PolyU

Precision, Planning, and Safety in Action

We - Explore

In June 2025, a complex lifting operation was successfully completed at the Fire Engineering Laboratory, Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering, South Tower, Block Z. Delivered under the Improvement Works Project, the work involved the delivery and installation of new scrubbers. The HSO played a pivotal role in ensuring that all safety protocols and regulatory requirements were met, enabling a safe and efficient installation process.    WhatsApp Image 20250621 at 183950

Purpose and Planning
The project aimed to enhance the laboratory’s capabilities by installing advanced scrubbers essential for a safe and compliant research environment. Success relied on detailed planning and close collaboration among multiple stakeholders, including the Campus Development Office, project architects, engineering consultants, safety officers, and lifting specialists.

Safety Measures

To uphold the highest safety standards, the lifting plan underwent a thorough review by experienced professionals to ensure compliance with Construction Industry Council's regulations and relevant standards. Key measures included:

  • Lifting operations: Carried out by a qualified team in accordance with comprehensive risk assessment and a pre-approved method statement.
  • Method Statements: Detailed instructions for load weights, lifting points, crane positioning, and signaling procedures.
  • Risk Assessment: Identification and mitigation of potential hazards including weather conditions, such as high winds or poor visibility.
  • Personnel Qualifications: Verification that all operators, riggers, and signal persons, were trained and competent.
  • Equipment Inspection: Confirmation that lifting equipment was in good working order with up-to-date maintenance records.
  • Load Security and Stability: Proper securing and balancing of loads to prevent shifting or falling.
  • Use of PPE: Mandatory use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety helmets, gloves, and safety boots, for all personnel in the vicinity.
  • Communication and Exclusion Zones: Clear communication plan and defined zones were established to prevent unauthorized access and ensure operational safety.

Commitment to Safety and Compliance

The operation was executed safely and efficiently through the coordinated efforts of all parties. This project reinforces PolyU’s commitment to safety and regulatory compliance and highlights the value of meticulous planning and professional expertise in delivering complex operations.
