On 20 June 2025, the Health and Safety Office (HSO) of PolyU embarked on a meaningful professional exchange with the Health, Safety and Environment Office (HSEO) of HKUST(Guangzhou) at their campus in Guangzhou.  The one-day visit  aimed to advance health and safety practices through collaboration and shared learning.

The visit began with a warm welcome and a souvenir presentation from Mr. Chris Leung, Director of Health and Safety at PolyU, to Mr. Percy To, Head (Heath, Safety & Environment) at HKUST(GZ) – a gesture that reflecting mutual respect and strong spirit of partnership.

Key Discussion Topics:

  • Safety management systems
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Strategies for building a strong safety culture
  • AI applications in health and safety

A highlight of the visit was the tour of HKUST(GZ)’s HSE Laboratory Health and Safety Practical Training Centre, featuring:

  • A showcase of standard safety facilities and equipment
  • Recommended safe laboratory set-ups
  • Ergonomic furniture
  • Interactive tools for hands-on training

Another standout initiative was the “Safety Moment”, an engaging approach to sharing safety knowledge and fostering a proactive safety culture among research teams.  This practice involves dedicating a brief period—typically at the beginning of meetings, training sessions, or laboratory activities—to discuss a specific safety topic, incident, or best practice. The goal is to keep safety at the forefront of everyone’s mind and to encourage continuous learning and vigilance. The effectiveness of the “Safety Moment” lies in its simplicity and consistency. It serves as a constant reminder of the importance of safety, helps identify potential hazards before they escalate, and empowers individuals to take proactive steps in maintaining a safe working environment.

The exchange provided valuable insights, strengthened professional ties, and reinforced a shared commitment to safety excellence. We extend our sincere thanks to the HSEO team at HKUST(GZ) for their warm hospitality and openness in sharing.
