PolyU’s Arts and Humanities is ranked 36th in the world1. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, our Linguistics is ranked 51st globally. Our research not only advances knowledge, but also contributes to the betterment of our community and the future of our world.

Our research addresses pressing society issues, such as the relationship among language, ageing and dementia, developing child-robot interaction systems for children at risk of autism; reducing communication hurdles in healthcare; and developing technology-based tools for language education. We also bridge urban studies research and artistic practices, and develop innovative digital tools to expand the scope of pre-college history education in Hong Kong and beyond. Recently, our research has expanded to address interaction of AI and the humanities, including studies linking AI to human brain activities, develop AI tools for speech therapy, deciphering dyslexia and dementia, examining reader reception of AI-translated literature, and creating metaliteracy programmes based on large language models.

Our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes aim to equip students with essential knowledge and practical skills applicable to a wide range of professions. Situated in the culturally vibrant urban context of Hong Kong, the Faculty offers programmes that meet the demands of a multicultural, knowledge-based, and technology-intensive society. This prepares students for successful careers on a global scale. While we maintain traditional perspectives on Chinese linguistics, history, and culture, we also embrace and integrate cutting-edge interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research in fields such as computational analysis, neuroscience, and digital humanities in traditional history, cultural and language studies. We aspire to be leaders in the application of AI and digital technologies in humanities education and research, showcasing our commitment to innovation and excellence. We welcome international collaborations with institutions and researchers from around the world to provide synergies in all humanities fields.

In 2023, the Faculty established the Yuen Ren Chao Prize in Language Science (Chao Prize). The Prize further reinforces our commitment to upholding the PolyU motto, “To learn and to apply, for the benefit of mankind”, contributing to knowledge discovery, knowledge transfer, and societal impact.
