To Facilitate Innovation & Research Collaboration with Mainland in 2017 China (Dongguan) International Science and Technology Cooperation Week

From December 8 to December 10, 2017, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) took part in the 2017 China (Dongguan) International Science & Technology Cooperation Week and Science & Research Institution Innovation Achievements Fair, which are jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Guangdong Provincial Government and the Chinese Academy of Science. The theme for this year's cooperation week is "Science and Technology Cooperation, Industry-Research Link-up, and Building a Bright Future", hoping to strive to create a large-scale, high-level and effective international exchange platform for science and technology exchanges and cooperation. PolyU has always carried out its mission in promoting the application of scientific research. It not only actively participates in the research related to national development but also hopes to cooperate with the mainland industries so that invention can benefit the community as a whole. The latest research achievements was dedicatedly showcased in the Hong Kong Science and Technology Exhibition pavilion, with focus in various fields such as nanomaterials, sustainable energy and rehabilitation sciences, with which three projects won the “Global Innovation Award” in the  TechConnect World Innovation Conferences and Expo.  PolyU will facilitate to strengthen collaboration with Pearl River Delta Great Bay Area industry through this platform.  Furthermore, PolyU also demonstrated the achievements made by current State Key Laboratories (SKL) of Chirosciences and Ultra-precision Machining, as well as National Engineering Centers (CNERC) for Rail Transit Electrification and Automation and Steel Structure. During the exhibition, many industrial partners and researchers expressed their interest in PolyU’s “Sustainable Water-water Derived Energy Generation System” and “Multi-functional Transparent Nano-Coating for Glass” projects.  PolyU, through this cooperation platform, has explored various research cooperation opportunities with governmental partners, industrial stakeholders and academia. Innovation Wall recognises achievement of PolyU inventors

At the Business of IP Asia Forum held on 7 December 2017, the PolyU Innovation Wall was unveiled to showcase the University’s recent patented technologies and pay tribute to the contributions made by PolyU inventors. To promote the development of Intellectual Property, PolyU organised a breakout session at the Forum. Titled “Crowdsourcing Ideas: Open Innovation and Strategic Partnership”, the session saw discussions on the challenges of open innovations and ways to create synergies between internal research and development efforts and external collaborations. PolyU 80th Anniversary Open Day - PolyU Innovation & Technology Showcase

In PolyU 80th Anniversary Open Day, Innovation and Technology Development Office will showcase a PolyU Mini Patent Wall and High-impact Collaborations at Core P, Podium in the campus.   The Mini Patent Wall showcases some selected patent certificates with videos for the patented technologies, to accentuate the importance of Intellectual Property protection at PolyU. You can also go to our GH Podium Annexe to find our PolyU Patent Wall with a full picture of over 40 patent certificates.   We also introduce PolyU’s initiatives on high-impact collaborative research with highlights on Food Safety Collaborative Platform, Life Science Collaborative Platform, etc.   Please contact us for any enquiries.

How to Get More Funding through Collaborations; How to Connect with PolyU Communications to Boost Innovation?

To encourage PolyU’s multidisciplinary co-operations and thus to boost more high-impact research collaborations, ITDO organized a gathering namely “How to Get More Funding through Collaborations; How to Connect with PolyU Communities to Boost Innovations” on 30 Nov 2017. Different cases on how and what collaborative platforms and projects ITDO have worked on, how to tap different funding opportunities, etc. were presented and shared by PolyU members. ITDO also introduced his upcoming move and was delighted to open up more channels to facilitate communications and collaborations with the PolyU communities. Review the event snapshots here.

The 21st Beijing Hong Kong Economic Cooperation Symposium

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University has collaborated in the 21st Beijing-Hong Kong Economic Cooperation Symposium (referred to as: Beijing-Hong Kong Symposium).  A grand opening ceremony was held at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center on the morning of November 28, 2017. The theme is "Innovation leads, elements exchange, open development, create prosperity".  The event focused in promoting the "Beijing story", which encourages for deepen cooperation and promote common prosperity through joint efforts.  In return, to create a better future for Beijing and Hong Kong. A series of signing ceremony took place to signify the strategic alliance between Beijing and Hong Kong.  With which there are two collaborations with Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s engagement.  In alignment to the event’s theme, Poly U is keen to actively promote cooperation in science and technology innovation and set up effective communication platform for information exchange.

Horizon 2020 Info Session – Hong Kong, Discover Research and Innovation Collaboration with Europe!

This information session on H2020 gave insights on Collaboration Scheme between the European Commission and The Research Grants Council of Hong Kong. PolyU – Monash University – Collinstar Capital joint lab in blockchain cryptocurrency research and development

The world's blockchain markets have a substantial growth in recent years, and there is an increasing interest in cryptocurrency, an encrypted medium of digital currency exchange. Monash University and a leading Fintech company Collinstar Capital have forged a multimillion-dollar (AUD) deal to establish the blockchain cryptocurrency Hcash as a virtual cryptocurrency exchange. The collaboration between universities and Collinstar Capital will see a joint blockchain cryptocurrency research and development lab open at Monash’s Clayton campus and a node at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Hong Kong being the mid-point between Australia and  Greater China privacy of crypto currencies, is serving as the bridge to lead in this digital transformation and innovation. “We would like to see our joint work to leave a trackable chain of innovations to change our way of doing business and the way we live our lives – We can foresee that in the not so distance future, boundaries of countries and regions will be removed as one world village, at least in the digital world.” said Prof. Lu Qin, Interim Head from the Department of Computing, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Monash Associate Professor Carsten Rudolph says the new lab will build practical blockchain-based solutions with rigorous security that can be applied to digital currencies, digital health and other applications.  “The company is attracted to this partnership as the research involved so far formed the foundation of one of the largest cryptocurrencies in the world, Monero." said Jacob Cheng, Managing partner of Collinstar Capital. PolyU Promotes High-impact R&D Collaboration and Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship for the Benefit of the Society

The Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Forum Luncheon jointly organised by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of the P. R. China., the Innovation and Technology Bureau of the Government of HKSAR and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) on September 25 at the Hong Kong Science Park. Around 300 government officials and representatives from universities, research and enterprises of the two places joined it. Themed "Promoting High-impact R&D Collaboration and Fostering Innovation and Entrepreneurship for the Benefit of the Society ", the Permanent Secretary for Innovation and Technology, Mr. CHEUK Wing Hing, gave the opening remark saying that the luncheon greatly encourage the collaboration between Hong Kong and the Mainland on the innovation and technology front. Ir Professor Ping-kong Alexander Wai, Vice President of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, said, "PolyU has delighted to further develop a close relationship with Government and industry to promote high-impact R&D collaboration. I am confident that this collaboration will form a foundation of a long-term and mutually beneficial partnership which also benefit the society." Mr Zhang Zhihong, Director General of the Torch High Technology Industrial Development Centre (TORCH), Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), introduced the mission of Torch Center is to promote high-tech industrialization, indigenous innovation as well as foster the growth of tech-based SMEs and boost technological innovation in enterprises. PolyU and the Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Commission jointly organized the 2nd Beijing-Hong Kong scientific and technological symposium

Innovation and Technology Development Office (ITDO) and Chinese Mainland Affairs Office (CMAO) of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) received an official delegation from Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Commission (BMSTC), and coordinated a meeting with representatives from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and City University of Hong Kong (CityU).   BMSTC and three higher education institutions summarized the work of the Beijing-Hong Kong scientific and technological cooperation and prospected for future collaboration opportunities in the areas of knowledge transfer, technology and talent exchange. BMSTC were impressed with institutions’ innovation achievements and student development.   During the meeting, Dr Po-Heng Lee, Assistant Professor of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Chen Hung, Chief Engineer of Beijing Sustainable Development Center exchanged ideas in the wastewater treatment, exploring the feasibility of cooperation and hoping to contribute in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei major sustainable development projects.   Finally, the participants discussed the form and content of the implementation of the 21st Beijing - Hong Kong Science and Technology Cooperation Forum.   Please click here to view the event photos.

PolyU’s Food Safety Consortium Received the 2017 C.B. Shogren Memorial Award from IAFP

The Food Safety Consortium (FSC), initiated by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), has recently been awarded the C.B. Shogren Memorial Award by the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) in recognition of FSC’s exceptional achievement in advancing global food safety, and in particular with its objectives and efforts in line with the mission of IAFP - “to provide food safety professionals worldwide with a forum to exchange information on protecting the food supply.” FSC becomes the first IAFP affiliate outside of the Americas to receive this prestigious award. The award ceremony was held on July 12, 2017 at the 2017 IAFP Annual Meeting which took place in Tampa, Florida. PolyU officially launches the FSC in December 2015 with significant support from its Innovation and Technology Development Office and the Food Safety and Technology Research Centre, with the mission of addressing unmet food safety needs through innovation . FSC is committed as a platform to foster closer engagement and collaboration among the industry, academia, and government in strengthening capacity building in food safety. It also utilized scientific approaches to enhance capacity and technical competency with a view to addressing current food safety challenges among food industry, with the ultimate goal of benefiting public food health. Founded in 1911, IAFP is home to educators, government officials, microbiologists, food industry executives and quality control professionals from 50 nations who are involved in all aspects of growing, storing, transporting, processing and preparing all types of foods. IAFP aims to provide food safety professionals worldwide with a forum to exchange information on protecting the food supply. FSC was recognized as the Hong Kong affiliate of IAFP since mid-2015, as the two organizations have consistent objectives and the affiliation will effectively synergize their efforts in advancing food safety in various regions of the world. In two years, FSC has grown from its budding stage to: • being the home of 49 local and multinational Corporate Members from different sectors of the food industry – manufacturing, retail & wholesale, catering, testing & services, food security management, and other stakeholder organizations and internationally renowned Advisors ; • being a key driver towards the establishment of the DISH Global Centre for Food Safety in collaboration with Lund University (LU), National Food Institute – Technical University of Denmark (DTU), and the University of Bologna (Unibo) to serve as a unique EU-Hong Kong platform to address global food safety challenges with world-class solutions; • organizing the first Global Food Safety & Technology Forum (GFSTF) - an international technology exchange conference to address food safety problems with science and technology - and ensuring its sustainability in collaboration with LU, DTU and Unibo; • participating in global initiatives such as the International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS); • initiating and participating in various collaborative projects in food fraud, food supply intelligence and technology development, and the most recent EU-China-Safe project under the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 program; and • organizing various other activities and outreaching globally to foster exchanges among the industry, academia, government, and other food safety stakeholders. While the C.B. Shogren Memorial Award is a significant recognition of FSC’s development, PolyU will build upon these solid foundations and bring about the most cutting-edge food safety and food technologies to benefit the global community.  The C.B. Shogren Memorial Award was presented at the IAFP Awards Banquet on July 12, 2017 in front of numerous food safety experts worldwide.
