Two PolyU research projects won Gold Awards at the 6th China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition

Two research projects managed by participants of PolyU’s GBA Startup Postdoc Programme won Gold Awards at the 6th China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. Hosted by the Ministry of Education, the Competition is a yearly event organised to encourage outstanding young innovators and entrepreneurs around the world to exchange innovative ideas and inspire entrepreneurship. Since its debut in 2015, the Guangzhou-based event has developed into the world’s largest innovation and entrepreneurship competition for college students. In 2020, the Competition attracted 6.31 million participants and 1.47 million projects from 4,186 colleges in 117 countries.

One of the winning projects was led by Dr Chang Jinhui. The team was supervised by Dr Jimmy Jin, Assistant Professor, School of Accounting and Finance, and Professor Wong Wing-tak, Chair Professor of Chemical Technology, Director of the University Research Facility in Chemical and Environmental Analysis and Deputy President and Provost. Dr Li Qiang, an alumnus from the Faculty of Business, also supervised the team from an industry perspective. The project is titled Development of Micro-encapsulated Probiotic Products with Fungal Mycelia. The project discovered a new way to increase the percentage of Akkermansia in the gut, thereby helping the body to lose weight and reduce obesity.

The other winning project was led by Dr Yu Ninghui , and titled Development of a Precision Low-pressure Lapping Technology for Aspherical and Freeform Mold. The team successfully developed a molding technology based on a graphene-like composite for the production of a high-precision aspherical glass lens which enables better imaging quality and a simplified optical system with clear advantages over traditional plastic lens.
