Mr Raman Hui

Mr Raman Hui, PolyU's Artist-in-Residence 2025/26, is a world-renowned animator and film director, a PolyU University Fellow and Alumnus. Born in Hong Kong, he is internationally recognised for his contributions to both Hollywood and Chinese cinema. A 1984 graduate of the Higher Diploma in Design (Graphic Communication) from the then Hong Kong Polytechnic, Hui began his career in animation, working as a graphic designer, animator, and TV animation director. In 1989, he furthered his studies in computer animation at Sheridan College in Canada before moving to California where he joined DreamWorks Animation.

At DreamWorks, Hui rose to the role of Supervising Animator and played a pivotal part in the production of major animated blockbusters such as Antz, Shrek, Shrek II, Shrek III, Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Furious Five, and Puss in Boots. He later gained acclaim as the director of Monster Hunt (2015) and Monster Hunt 2 (2018), which became record-breaking hits in China. Known for blending Eastern storytelling with Western animation techniques, Hui continues to be a pioneering figure in global animation.

His achievements have earned him numerous prestigious accolades, most notably the Best New Director award at the 35th Hong Kong Film Awards in 2016 for Monster Hunt, along with the Bronze Bauhinia Star conferred by the Hong Kong SAR Government in 2009 and the ShoWest Animation Director of the Year Award in 2007 — bringing pride to both his homeland and the international animation community.
