The Department of Architecture (ARCH) successfully hosted an insightful lecture under the ARCH Talk Series on 18 September 2026 at the PolyU Campus. The lecture, titled "Weaving Love: Pioneering 3D Metal Printing in the Era of Computational Design," provided an exclusive learning opportunity for ARCH students to explore cutting-edge advancements in construction technology.
The talk featured three distinguished experts who spearheaded the groundbreaking "Weaving Love" project—Asia's first large-scale 3D metal printed pavilion located at Hong Kong's New Immigration Headquarters:
- Ms Christina POON, Senior Architect (Design & Technology) at the Architectural Services Department (ArchSD), HKSAR Government.
- Mr Hugo MA, Project Manager at the Architectural Services Department (ArchSD), HKSAR Government.
- Ir Prof. Siwei LIU, Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), PolyU.
During the session, the speakers uncovered the engineering secrets behind the project, detailing how advanced Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) technology brought the complex, veil-like steel structure to life. The presentation provided deep technical insights into critical design challenges, the adoption of the direct analysis method, and the valuable data gained from full-scale load testing. The lecture concluded with a forward-looking discussion on the future applications of 3D metal printing in the construction sector.
The Department of Architecture extends its sincere thanks to Ms Poon, Mr Ma, and Ir Prof. Liu for sharing their invaluable professional expertise, and to all attendees whose participation contributed to a vibrant and engaging academic exchange.
