They can also choose to focus on a desired elective stream to acquire specialised knowledge.

BEng(Hons) in Air Transport Engineering

First Study Year

Students first build up their core knowledge of aviation safety, reliability, aircraft performance, flight management, airport services engineering, airline operations and human factors engineering. This gives them a solid understanding of aviation and furthers their pursuit of a specialised stream of study.

Second Study Year / Final Year

Students can apply their skills and knowledge in a final-year project on operations research, airworthiness and regulation, or aviation project management to build up their professional skills as engineers. They can also focus on a desired elective stream to acquire specialised knowledge.

Other Learning Experiences

Summer internships, industry visits, on-site experience sharing, and industrial training are arranged to complement classroom teaching and enhance students’ learning and industry experience in the fields of aeronautics and aviation. Industrial training is provided by the PolyU Industrial Centre.

Student Message

Studying AAE at PolyU has been transformative, equipping me with not only technical expertise but also a passion for aviation. The programme’s rigorous curriculum from aerodynamics to aviation management provides a strong foundation, and hands-on projects connect theory with practice.

One highlight was the chance to intern with Hong Kong Airlines, which deepened my understanding of aviation operations, especially flight operations. I came to understand that maintaining flight safety requires the joint efforts of all parties, including pilots, flight dispatchers, engineers, and flight attendants. Behind every safe flight lies the hard work of all stakeholders. This experience strengthened my resolve to enter the aviation industry.

The AAE Department offers exceptional support, from scholarships and global exchanges to research seminars and industry talks. The academic staff are incredibly helpful, providing both academic guidance and career advice.

Beyond academia, the programme’s career workshops and networking events connected me with industry leaders. Whether you aspire to be an engineer, analyst, or policymaker, AAE gives you the platform and opportunities to realise your ambitions.

To future students: Embrace every challenge and treat it as an opportunity. This programme will prepare you not just for a career, but also to shape the future of aviation!

CHENG Yung

PolyU’s Aviation Engineering programme provided a strong foundation for my future in the aviation industry and encouraged me to grow as a lifelong learner. The wide range of courses, from core subjects like aerodynamics to hands-on sessions in the Industrial Centre, helped build my understanding of aircraft systems and engineering fundamentals. The practical components, in particular, gave me the chance to apply classroom knowledge and develop a more hands-on, problem-solving mindset.

Aside from the core curriculum, the chance to take part in the Design Build Fly competition in the US and go on an overseas exchange really broadened my outlook and deepened my interest in aviation. These experiences allowed me to work with students from different backgrounds, adapt to new learning environments, and strengthen my teamwork and problem-solving skills qualities that are imperative for any situation in work or education.

The programme attaches equal importance to technical skills and soft skills, and that balance gave me the confidence to take the next step towards a career in aviation. I’m thankful for all the support and opportunities I had during my time here, and I believe that this programme is a great starting point for anyone with a passion for aviation.

LAMSON Michael Jr.

As an aviation fan and an Air Transport Engineering (ATE) graduate, I gained crucial foundational knowledge and insights into the industry while studying Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering (AAE). The course gave me a bridge to the aviation industry and a wide range of support, transforming me from an aviation fan into someone passionate about serving the aviation industry.

In my studies, the mix of foundational knowledge lectures and the hands-on experience in the lab and Industrial Centre (IC) gave me a chance to try out the knowledge I had learned in a simulated environment. Also, the capstone project offered a connection to PhD studies. I received much support that helped me to perform better in the capstone project and learn extra knowledge that could not be provided by lectures.

Other than studying, AAE gave me many opportunities to try activities outside the campus. I joined as a “passenger” in CrashEx 2024, which made me more familiar with the industry. Thanks to the unique opportunities provided by AAE, my university life was wide-ranging and unforgettable.

LEUNG Chin Wai Kenny

As an AAE graduate, I’m deeply grateful for the strong academic foundation and diverse industrial opportunities provided by the Department. The ATE curriculum is both comprehensive and practical, covering critical aerodynamic concepts such as flight control and avionics systems, alongside essential topics like airline and airport management, human factors, and air regulations.

One of the most distinctive strengths of the programme is its strong industry connections. It provides students with invaluable opportunities through internships and industrial capstone projects, enabling us to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios. My internship at Cathay Pacific in Bangkok was a pivotal experience that ignited my passion for the aviation industry. Additionally, participating in the industrial capstone project deepened my understanding of industry operations and best practices, thoroughly preparing me for my future career.

As I prepare for my career, I’m enthusiastic about applying my AAE skills to solve practical engineering challenges. The aviation industry holds endless possibilities, and I’m honoured to be an AAE graduate, ready to contribute to its transformative future.

TAM Hang Yi

As an Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering (AAE) graduate, I am grateful for the solid foundation and various opportunities the Aviation Engineering programme gave me. The comprehensive curriculum, which includes the use of a full-scale A320 flight simulator for my capstone project, equipped me with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for the aviation industry. This hands-on experience was invaluable in my journey to becoming an airline pilot with Cathay Pacific Airways.

The AAE Department's solid support for and dedication to student development were essential to my career progression. Through various workshops, competitions, and industry collaborations, I gained invaluable insights and real-world experience that built up my aviation knowledge as well as solidifying my career plan. The use of the full-scale A320 flight simulator for my capstone project allowed me to enhance my skills and better prepare to pursue my dream job as a pilot. All in all, studying in the AAE Department significantly enriched and broadened my understanding of the dynamic aviation industry.
