Programme Aims
The programme is designed to equip students with knowledge of Chinese history and culture, as well as personal skills that they can apply in pursuing their career and in making contributions to the government, economy and society of Hong Kong, China and the rest of the world. The general aim of the programme is to educate and train students who are
- strongly committed to self-cultivation and the welfare of the community;
- culturally enriched and have effective communication skills;
- respectful of the rule of law;
- socially responsible; and
- observant of business ethics and business common-sense.
Specifically, the graduates of the programme will be able to
- write lucidly in modern Chinese and English for general communication as well as for administrative and business purposes;
- speak fluent Putonghua Chinese and English in administrative, business and everyday situations;
- know the habits and social customs of people in Hong Kong and other places in China;
- interact in a socially appropriate manner with people from all walks of life;
- understand the global trends, opportunities, different cultures and social development needs in the local, national and global contexts and articulate their understanding of Chinese history and culture for people from a variety of backgrounds;
- make judgment on the basis of a solid grounding in Chinese history and culture when applied to, for example, government policy, institutional development, social, cultural problems and accept their responsibilities as professionals and citizens to society, their own nation and the world;
- employ their background in Chinese history and culture to a variety of areas in a range of specialisations, such as posts in government, business and NGOs as an entry-level professional; and
- demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit and skills in their work, including the discovery and use of opportunities, and experimentation with novel ideas.

- General University Requirement (GUR) subjects and credits (27 credits)
- Major Subjects (78 credits plus 3 training credits)
Faculty Common First-Year Curriculum: 18 credits
Discipline Specific Language: 3 credits
Core: 30 credits + 3 WIE training credits
Area Specific Elective Subjects: 27 credits
Specific Area 1: History and Institutions
Specific Area 2: Thought and Religion
Specific Area 3: Literature and Arts
Specific Area 4: Environment and Society
Specific Area 5: Science, Technology and Culture
Specific Area 6: Cultural and Heritage Management - Free Electives Subjects (12 credits)
All admitted students will embark on a Common Year One curriculum. After the first year of studies, students can decide whether to continue with their initial choice or switch to another choice within the Faculty. Those who wish to switch can choose their preferred departmental scheme/programme through a ranking assessment.

For students applying with international qualifications, they should possess the following qualifications on Chinese and attend an interview to prove that they have reached the required level of Chinese proficiency:
- Grade E or above in GCE A-level; or
- Level 5 or above in Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK); or
- Grade 4 or above in IB Chinese Language subject; or
- the equivalent.
