Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims

We provide advanced study opportunities for electrical engineers who work in power and electricity utilisation industries, electrical product manufacturing industries, government organisations, and contracting and consulting companies. Our students gain in-depth knowledge of state-of-the-art advancements in modern electrical science and technology, such as power systems, the industrial utilisation of electrical energy, power electronics, railway systems and drive control, automation, and optoelectronics.

Characteristics

The multidisciplinary nature of this programme encourages students to develop a broad perspective and allows them to take subjects in related technical fields, such as communications, computing, marketing, management and information sciences. The programme also allows students to take a combination of subjects and provides two specialism options:

  • MSc in Electrical Engineering (Electrical Power Systems)#
    電機工程學理學碩士學位 (電力系統)#
  • MSc in Electrical Engineering (Railway Systems)*
    電機工程學理學碩士學位 (鐵路系統)*

# The HK Electric Institute assists in teaching some of the designated subjects.
* MTR Academy assists in teaching some of the designated subjects.

Recognition & Prospects

Upon successful completion of the required content of the respective awards, students will graduate with a Master of Science Degree (MSc) in any one of the following areas (specialisms):

  • Electrical Engineering

  • Electrical Engineering (Electrical Power Systems)

  • Electrical Engineering (Railway Systems)

Graduates of this programme have in-depth knowledge of the latest advances in electrical engineering and are able to undertake advanced technical and managerial work in electrical engineering and related engineering fields.

Curriculum

Programme Structure

Students who enrol in the MSc in EE programme have the option to select from a wide range of subjects from other disciplines, such as accounting, computing, construction and environment, and logistics.  Students can also select a combination of subjects that will allow them to graduate with a Specialism Award. In general, each subject is taught through one evening class per week over a 13-week semester. Full-time students normally take three to five subjects per semester. Part-time students normally take two subjects per semester. Each taught subject corresponds to three credits, and the dissertation corresponds to nine credits.

For the MSc in Electrical Engineering

Students must complete:

  • 7 taught subjects, including at least 4 EE Core Subjects, and a Dissertation;
    OR

  • 10 taught subjects, including at least 6 EE Core Subjects.

For the MSc in Electrical Engineering (Electrical Power Systems)/MSc in Electrical Engineering (Railway Systems)

Students must complete:

  • 7 taught subjects, including at least 4 EE Core Subjects for the respective specialism, and a Dissertation pertaining to the respective specialism;
    OR

  • 10 taught subjects, including at least 8 EE Core Subjects, with at least 6 corresponding to the respective specialism.

Note - Most of the subjects are offered on a 2-year rolling basis. Students may not be able to take 6 Core Subjects in the specified specialism in a single year.

Core Areas of Study

This is a brief summary of the core areas of study. Upon registration, students will be provided with detailed information on the subjects available for selection.

  • Power System Technology, Analysis, Operation & Planning

  • Electrical Traction & Drives

  • Railway System Design, Operation & Maintenance

  • Control & Computing

  • Optoelectronics

Student Message

I chose to enrol in the MSc in Electrical Engineering because I was very interested in this subject and wanted to know more about it. This programme covers various professional fields of electrical engineering, such as energy conversion, power electronics, motion control systems, power system protection, high voltage engineering and even enterprise risk and asset management, allowing students to choose subjects according to their interests or industry needs. In addition, experiments and case studies enable students to apply their theoretical knowledge to solve real-world problems. Through studying this programme, I have deepened my understanding of various relevant fields and thus broadened my horizons. At the same time, I have acquired the professional skills necessary for my career development, which will help me to find a job in my preferred field.

In sum, I wish to thank my department for offering a valuable programme that will further my career development.

LAM Tsz Chun

I am a graduate of the BEng (Honours) and MSc in Electrical Engineering at PolyU. The MSc programme equipped me with advanced knowledge of various aspects of electrical engineering, such as energy and power systems and high voltage technologies. I am now working for a company in the domain of energy and power. The knowledge I gained during PolyU’s MSc programme is relevant to and practically useful in my current role. I am grateful to PolyU for providing a programme that enhances students’ performance and professional competitiveness regardless of their educational background or expertise in electrical engineering.

LI Tsz Chun

Before I enrolled in the MSc programme at PolyU, I had worked in a power company for about four years. Through this work experience, I recognised my weaknesses in terms of professional knowledge and chose to return to campus.

When considering traditional electrical engineering schools in Hong Kong, PolyU was my first choice. The courses provided in the EE Department at PolyU cover several fields, such as power utilisation, power system, power electronics, railway systems, transportation systems, automation and optoelectronics. Therefore, this programme is flexible and suitable for students from various industries. It also offers a research course, which developed my research and academic writing skills.

Thanks to my MSc study, I had the opportunity to pursue a PhD in Electrical Engineering. Three of my classmates also continued their studies at PolyU. Other classmates also received job offers from power grid companies, research institutes and design institutes.
