Physiotherapy (PT) is the art and science of rehabilitation, preventing injuries and disabilities, restoring independence and promoting a maximal level of function in individuals with physical and psychological disorders. Physiotherapists make use of multiple physical means to provide patient care. Examples include cryotherapy, electrotherapy, exercise therapy, heat therapy, hydrotherapy, manual therapy and traction, as well as assistive devices and artificial limbs to help individuals regain maximal functional potential. Physiotherapists contribute to the multidisciplinary team through patient evaluation, treatment planning and delivery, education, research and consultation in hospitals, clinics, industry and the community.
Programme Aims
The overall aim of the MPT programme is to equip students to become qualified physiotherapists who can practice physiotherapy autonomously, safely and effectively in different settings, and to meet the health care needs of society.
MPT students are developed into lifelong learners and critical consumers of the professional and scientific health care literature. Graduates possess the ability to engage in research and to critically analyse and integrate information from different sources into clinical practice. By acquiring a strong sense of professional commitment, our graduates are able to provide high quality physiotherapy services and contribute to the advancement of the rehabilitation profession.
Characteristics
The curriculum is based upon a solid theoretical framework. Students learn and develop the ability to link theory to practice. The curriculum provides opportunities for the students to integrate knowledge from different courses in fundamental and professional subjects to render sound clinical judgments.
Professional Recognition
MPT graduates are fully eligible to apply for registration by the Physiotherapists Board of Hong Kong.
Career Prospects
Our graduates have a high rate of employment, with a wide range of options from acute care and rehabilitation hospitals to special schools and old aged homes, other community rehabilitation settings and private practice.
Physiotherapists can specialise in different rehabilitation areas, take up managerial positions or be involved in clinical education and research. Opportunities for higher degree studies at the MPhil and PhD levels are also available.
Programme Structure and Content
This is a 2-year professional programme designed to prepare the students to become competent physiotherapists at the entry level. The programme involves university-based study and clinical education at hospitals, rehabilitation centres, special schools and institutions.
Foundation Subjects
Functional Anatomy, Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Movement Science, Exercise Science, Clinical Neuroscience and Neurology, Research Methods and Statistics, Human Development across Lifespan, and Rehabilitation Psychology
Professional Subjects
Professional Ethics and Legal Issues, Principles of Physiotherapy Practice, Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy I and II, Manipulative Physiotherapy, Electrophysical Therapy I and II, Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy, Neurological Physiotherapy I and II, Pediatric Neurology and Developmental Disabilities, Administration and Management, and Primary Health and Community Care
Research Project
Students form small groups and work under the guidance of an assigned faculty member to conduct a specific research project, which involves the review of relevant scientific literature, data collection and analysis, and a report of research findings.
Clinical Education
Students complete 6 clinical placements in 30 weeks (a minimum of 1,000 hours) during the 2-year programme, comprising 8-week clinical placements in different community rehabilitation settings to better prepare them to work in these settings upon graduation.

Applicants should have obtained credits for each of the following prerequisite university undergraduate-level courses before admission to the programme:

Human Physiology (3 credits or the equivalent)

If you are not a native speaker of English, and your Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English, you are expected to fulfil the University’s minimum English language requirement for admission purpose. Please refer to the "Admission Requirements" section for details.
Preference will be given to applicants who are able to communicate effectively in English, Cantonese and Putonghua.

Should an applicant has not satisfactorily completed introductory human anatomy (3 credits) and human physiology (3 credits) courses during their undergraduate training, some introductory human anatomy and human physiology courses are also acceptable as equivalence provided that they carry 3 credits each. For examples:

Human anatomy/physiology courses not up to Bachelor's degree level, or courses on animal anatomy/physiology, are not recognised as equivalent to these requirements.

For those who have not fulfilled the human anatomy/physiology course requirements during application period, proof of enrolment of an acceptable anatomy/physiology course must be submitted together with the application. Should an applicant be admitted to the programme, it is his/her responsibility to present all documents as required including transcripts/certificates of the human anatomy/physiology courses during programme registration.
