Abstract:
Topic: L&T - Use of Advanced Technology in Teaching
(Speaker: Dr Peter Ng)
In this presentation, we explore the transformative role of immersive technology and the metaverse in enhancing educational experiences. Central to our discussion is the innovative application of virtual environments to create a dynamic learning landscape. We introduce the concept of a virtual tutor, an AI-powered guide within the metaverse, designed to offer instant, personalized support and feedback to learners. This facilitates a customized learning path, significantly improving engagement and understanding.
Additionally, we delve into the development of metaverse games tailored for language learning and presentation practice. These immersive games engage users in interactive scenarios that simulate real-life conversations and presentations, offering a safe and controlled space for practicing language skills and public speaking. The gamified aspect makes learning more enjoyable and contributes to more effective language acquisition.
A key component of our educational approach within the metaverse is the utilization of knowledge graphs. These visual tools map out the relationships between keywords and concepts, aiding learners in visualizing connections and grasping complex ideas more intuitively. Overall, integrating immersive technology and the metaverse presents a compelling avenue for making learning more interactive, personalized, and impactful, equipping learners with the skills needed for success in a digital era.
Sub-topic: Application of Immersive Technologies in Learning and Teaching
(Speaker: Dr Kevin Wong)
In this seminar, we present the application of immersive technologies in learning and teaching. It showcases the transformative journey from preliminary experimentation to a comprehensive experiential learning environment, demonstrating how virtual and augmented reality tools have enabled more immersive, interactive, and effective learning experiences. We first explain the available immersive technologies in PolyU. The features of each technology are discussed in details. Then, several applications of immersive technologies in Faculty of Health and Social Science are illustrated. The class design, impacts and challenges are reviewed.
