On 28 April 2025, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) unveiled groundbreaking research projects which applied artificial intelligence (AI) and medicine-engineering integration.
During the showcase, Prof. CAI Jing, Management Committee Member of Research Institute for Smart Ageing (RISA), Head and Professor at the Department of Health Technology and Informatics, presented the AI-assisted lung radiotherapy support system developed by his team. It employs an innovative “function-guided approach” for designing optimal individualized radiotherapy plans for lung cancer patients, which can reduce radiation damage to lung and enhance post-operative quality of life. The innovation has been awarded a Silver Medal at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva. It demonstrates RISA members’ contributions on knowledge transfer in healthcare by interdisciplinary research combining AI, engineering and data science.
