Hong Kong is buzzing with excitement as it prepares to co-host the 15th National Games alongside Guangdong and Macau, uniting efforts within the Greater Bay Area (GBA). In line with this spirit, PolyU was honoured to invite Mr Kenneth Fok, Vice-President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC), Chairperson of the Hong Kong, China Olympic Academy and PolyU Council Member, to share his insights on the remarkable progress of Hong Kong sports development and his aspirations for the Games.

As part of the Dean of Students Talk Series, titled “Together We Dream, We Fly”, organised in collaboration with the SF&OC and the Hong Kong China Sports Alliance (HKCSA), the event focused on the spirit of Olympism and the upcoming National Games. It attracted approximately 200 attendees, including PolyU’s management, staff and students.

In his address, Mr Fok emphasised the significance of the National Games for Hong Kong, highlighting their potential to enhance regional integration within the GBA. He stated, “The Government’s continuous support has enabled Hong Kong, China athletes to shine in international competitions. The 15th National Games to be staged in the GBA reflects the Nation’s trust in Hong Kong and provides a platform for sports collaboration on a regional level while elevating local sports standards.” He called on the public to support the National Games and engage in sports activities, fostering a collective spirit that bolsters athletes’ confidence and performance.

The event also featured an engaging discussion led by Professor Horace Mui, PolyU Interim Dean of Students. He was joined by Mr Fok, swimmer Ms Au Hoi Shun Stephanie, a five-time Olympian and Asian Games medallist, and fencer Mr Nicholas Edward Choi, a London 2012 Olympian and Asian Games medallist. Appointed as inaugural SF&OC “Olympic Ambassadors”, the two athletes shared insights into their personal journeys, the challenges they faced, and the importance of perseverance in realising sporting dreams.

Professor Wing-Tak Wong, PolyU Deputy President and Provost, praised the contributions of the speakers, highlighting PolyU’s commitment to sports development and nurturing elite athletes. With various support schemes in place, PolyU continues to foster a vibrant sports culture, inspiring students to embrace the Olympic motto: “Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together”.

To further this commitment, PolyU offers programmes designed to help student-athletes excel both academically and athletically. Key initiatives include the Outstanding Sportsmen Recommendation Scheme (OSRS), the Student-Athlete Learning Support and Admission Scheme (SALSA scheme), and the Special Talents Admission and Recognition Schemes (STARS). Additionally, PolyU collaborates with the Hong Kong Sports Institute to organise the Elite Athletes Study Programme.
