Fuelling GBA innovation as Shenzhen-HK-Guangzhou leads Global Innovation Index 2025
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has announced the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2025, with the Shenzhen–Hong Kong–Guangzhou cluster ranking first among the Top 100 Innovation Clusters globally for the first time. This milestone highlights the Greater Bay Area’s (GBA) dominance in innovation and technology. PolyU is encouraged by this recognition and is committed to enhancing the GBA’s innovation ecosystem.
PolyU President Professor Jin-Guang Teng emphasised the importance of collaborative innovation in the GBA, stating that the University will leverage its strengths in basic and translational research, as well as technological innovation to promote socioeconomic development. The University has secured over 1,650 patents and has established translational research institutes in 12 major Mainland cities, facilitating technology transfer and the industrialisation of research outcomes.
Through the Research, Academic, and Industry Sectors One-plus (RAISe+) Scheme, PolyU has funded six projects across various fields, including but not limited to artificial intelligence and new materials, aimed at accelerating commercialisation. The PolyVentures ecosystem has incubated over 600 start-ups, while initiatives like InnoHub and the PolyU International Future Challenge foster innovation and entrepreneurship.
Internationally, PolyU’s research excellence is recognised, with 355 scholars listed among the World’s Top 2% Most-cited Scientists 2024 for career-long or single-year citation impact, according to an index by Stanford University. The University attracts distinguished scholars through initiatives like the Global STEM Professorship Scheme, focusing on cutting-edge research areas such as machine learning and quantum technology.
With state-of-the-art facilities, including the State Key Laboratories and the newly established PolyU Academy for Artificial Intelligence (PAAI), the University is well-positioned to lead in research and innovation. Looking ahead, PolyU aims to deepen collaborations within the GBA, further translating research outcomes into societal benefits, thereby contributing significantly to the development of Hong Kong and the GBA.
