The start of a new academic year is a time of anticipation, aspiration and fresh beginnings. For thousands of new students joining PolyU this September, the Student Orientation 2026 marked the first step in what promises to be a transformative university journey.

On 28 August, PolyU welcomed its new cohort of students at the President’s Welcome, where more than 2,500 freshmen gathered at the Jockey Club Auditorium while many others joined via live broadcast at the Wong Man and Tang Kit Wah Global Student Hub and other locations across campus to receive their formal welcome to the PolyU family. Accompanied by members of the University’s senior management team, President Professor Jin-Guang Teng greeted the incoming cohort and shared PolyU’s vision of nurturing socially responsible professionals and leaders with a strong sense of national pride and a global outlook. He also encouraged students to embrace innovation, pursue excellence and make meaningful contributions to society as they begin their university experience.

Addressing the new students, Professor Teng highlighted PolyU’s commitment to advancing education, research and knowledge transfer for the benefit of Hong Kong, the Nation and the world, stating, “We aspire for our graduates to become leaders in innovation, while our research delivers innovation with direct societal benefits, ensuring that the spirit of innovation is embodied in all our endeavours. As we prepare to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the University next year, we warmly invite everyone to stay tuned for our upcoming activities and join us in celebrating this significant milestone.”

One of the highlights of the morning was an inspiring session by Ms Chen Rui, PolyU alumna and Founder and CEO of AI-driven food robotics company BOTINKIT. Reflecting on her entrepreneurial journey, she encouraged students to pursue their ambitions boldly and remain open to opportunities beyond their comfort zones. Listed in Fortune Top 40 Under 40 Business Elites in China 2025, Ms Chen shared her story of how innovation, resilience and creativity can lead to real-world impact.

Freshmen were also introduced to the many learning, leadership and personal development opportunities available at PolyU. Student representatives shared their own experiences of campus life, while performances by students and the PolyU Choir showcased the University’s vibrant and creative community.

The orientation experience continued on 1 September with the Orientation Showcase at the Shaw Sports Complex, which attracted more than 3,400 new students. Filled with energy and enthusiasm, the event featured 47 booths organised by University units and student groups, offering newcomers a comprehensive introduction to campus resources, support services and extracurricular opportunities.

From student societies and leadership programmes to wellness services and co-curricular activities, the Showcase demonstrated the breadth of opportunities available beyond the classroom. Freshmen had the chance to interact directly with staff members and senior students, gaining valuable insights into university life while beginning to build new friendships and connections.

Joining the event, Professor Teng, together with Professor Ben Young, Vice President (Student and Global Affairs), Professor Horace Mui, Dean of Students, together with the management team of the Student Affairs Office, visited the booths and engaged with students, encouraging them to embrace new opportunities, broaden their horizons and make the most of the PolyU experience.

As a new chapter begins at PolyU, the Student Orientation 2026 has welcomed freshmen into a vibrant community where learning, growth and discovery await.
