Driving innovation in mobility solutions, PolyU is setting new benchmarks by pioneering cutting-edge technologies that enhance transportation safety and efficiency. Recently, three projects from PolyU, led by Professor Edward Chung Chin-shin, Professor of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Professor Huang Hailong, Assistant Professor of the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering, and Dr Yu Yue, Research Assistant Professor of the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, have been awarded approximately HK$10.6 million in total from the Smart Traffic Fund. These initiatives focus on innovation in road safety, traffic management, and sustainable transport, reflecting the University’s commitment to enhancing transportation in Hong Kong.

Objective: Implement a speed guidance system for heavy goods vehicle drivers that analyses road conditions and vehicle dynamics to enhance driving safety and reduce rollover risks.

Smart Route Planning System

Professor of the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics

Funding: HK$3.53 million
Duration: 21 months

Objective: Develop an AI-driven energy consumption estimation model that optimises route planning for fuel-powered, electric, and hybrid vehicles by considering road conditions and vehicle types.

Automated Monitoring Traffic Data System

Funding: HK$2.22 million
Duration: 24 months

Objective: Create an automated system to monitor traffic detector status and non-recurrent events, providing real-time alerts to enhance data quality and improve traffic management efficiency.

Such achievements demonstrate PolyU’s long-standing commitment to vehicle-related innovation, with the University contributing a total of 26 projects funded by the Smart Traffic Fund to date. This fund aims to support local organisations in conducting research and applying innovative technologies to enhance commuting convenience and improve road safety.
