Metamorphosis is a natural attribute that has been inherent in species evolution and survival throughout time. The realization of metamorphosis in robot structures is a core for structural intelligence that integrates with computational intelligence to achieve a genuine embodied intelligence to match the current rise of the artificial intelligence in the world. By obviating the need for adding components or disassembling a structure, metamorphism imparts on a mechanism a disruptive change in its structure, thereby completely altering traditional structural design. This constitutes a paradigm shift with respect to current robot design trends – which have resulted in the fundamental structures of robots remaining immutable since the world’s first robot appeared in 1959 – engendering a series of metamorphic robots that undergo deformation, structural change, topological variation, and degree of freedom alteration. The talk presents the trends and discoveries.
