PAIR 6002 Sustainable Cities

This course spans 5 disciplines: (1) Urban Informatics; (2) Sustainable Urban Systems and Technologies; (3) Smart Energy Systems; (4) Land and Environmental Management; (5) Resource Engineering and Carbon Neutrality.

Expected learning outcomes

  • Articulate the principles underlying recent technological innovations across various domains of smart and sustainable cities.

  • Critically analyse and evaluate scientific literature and media coverage related to smart and sustainable cities.

PAIR 6002: Sustainable Cities

This course consists of 5 modules, each of which will be covered by modular teaching activities led by different PAIR Constituent Research Units.  

Course providers:

  • Otto Poon Charitable Foundation Smart Cities Research Institute (SCRI): Week 01–03
  • Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development (RISUD): Week 04–06
  • Otto Poon Charitable Foundation Research Institute for Smart Energy (RISE): Week 08–09
  • Research Institute for Land and Space (RILS): Week 10–11
  • Research Centre for Resources Engineering towards Carbon Neutrality (RCRE): Week 12–13
  • The course will take place every Thursday evening from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm (3 hours) for 13 consecutive weeks, starting from 5 February to 7 May 2026, with a reading week in the middle of the course.
  • Make-up classes may be arranged (tentatively scheduled for 14 and 21 May 2026), if necessary.

  • Limited on-site attendance is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • A confirmation email will be sent shortly after successful course admission.
  • The enrolment deadline of the course “Sustainable Cities” (PAIR 6002) in academic year 2025/26 is 31 Dec 2025.
Enrolment to the PAIR Advanced Education Programme is free of charge. However, PolyU will charge an administrative fee for issuing each Certificate of Completion upon request.
  • Participants fulfilling the minimum attendance requirement of 70% (9 out of 13 weeks) can apply for a Certificate of Completion for the entire course, issued by the PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR).
  • An administrative fee will be charged for issuing each certificate:
    • HK$2,000 for a certificate for the entire course
    • HK$500 for a certificate for completion of each week
    • PolyU alumni will receive a 50% discount on these fees

The course will be held at Senate Room, Room M1603, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and online simultaneously.
