Abstract

The integration of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) into interpreter training represents a transformative shift in educational methodologies, addressing longstanding challenges in preparing students for the dynamic field of interpreting. This chapter reviews the benefits, challenges and methodologies associated with implementing VR and AR technologies in interpreter training programs. It highlights how these technologies enhance engagement, provide opportunities for simulated practice in complex scenarios and offer immediate feedback and adaptive learning experiences for interpreting trainees, allowing them to develop critical skills in a controlled yet immersive environment. This chapter then addresses potential challenges associated with implementing VR and AR, such as technical limitations, pedagogical integration, ethical concerns and financial constraints in interpreting classrooms. Methodologies for effectively integrating VR and AR into interpreter training are also proposed, focusing on developing content, best practices for curriculum integration and evaluating technological effectiveness. This chapter concludes with a discussion of future directions for research and development in VR and AR applications in interpreter training, emphasizing the need for ongoing innovation and collaboration between educators, technologists and policymakers.
