In this programme, Hong Kong Ballet’s dancers will perform excerpts from contemporary works juxtaposed with classical works to demonstrate how ballet has evolved from the past to the present.

Unlikely pairings of ballet with rock & roll and other current music genres dispel preconceived notions in explosive and surprising ways. Featured ballets are Trey McIntyre’s A Day in the Life set to The Beatles’ music, Edwaard Liang’s Sacred Thread and Fei Bo’s Shenren Chang. The contemporary programme offers a fresh perspective on how classical arts meet unexpected cultural fusions and illuminates new possibilities.

The dancers will lead interactive discussions and games to explore with you how these themes are reflected in our society and in the ballet world. How have gender roles of men and women been challenged within ballet? How have various genres of music influenced ballet and our cultural perceptions and acceptance of diversity? These questions are meant to stimulate your curiosity and encourage you to make connections about life, culture, identity and art – making ballet an experience that is relevant and meaningful.
