The PolyU Theatre was founded by the CPC in 2017, with esteemed dramaturge Dr Chung King-fai, the Artist-in-Residence 2013/14 and 2014 University Fellow, as the Honorary Advisor. By organizing professional training and performances, the PolyU Theatre serves as a platform for students, staff and alumni to elevate their skills, to help cultivate a flair for art and culture, and influence each other in a positive way. This is a manifestation of lifelong learning and whole-person development which PolyU champions. Drama is a microcosm of life. Taking part in drama, either on or off the stage, and reflecting on ourselves certainly deepens our understanding of life and benefits others as well.

The PolyU Theatre’s inaugural performance was Xiaojing Hutong, a modern Chinese theatre classic by famed playwright Li Longyun. Co-directed by Dr Chung King-fai and Mr Lee Ming-sum, it featured a strong cast of veteran Hong Kong actors and some 30 PolyU Theatre members. Along with stage performance, the PolyU Theatre had also devised a series of developmental programmes so that members of the PolyU could know more about the various aspects of theatre-making by attending run- throughs and backstage tours.
