The 3rd International Workshop on Intelligent Tropical-storm-resilient System for Coastal Cities (INTACT 2026)

On 17 August 2026, The 3rd International Workshop on Intelligent Tropical-storm-resilient System for Coastal Cities (INTACT 2026) was successfully held at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), in Room GH201. The workshop focused on tropical storm disaster prevention and mitigation, and the enhancement of coastal city resilience against climate change, providing a high-level platform for academic exchange and collaboration among experts and scholars from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and beyond.

The workshop was jointly organized by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the National Rail Transit Electrification and Automation Engineering Technology Research Center (Hong Kong Branch). It was an important academic event under the Research Grants Council’s Theme-based Research Scheme project, “INTACT: Intelligent Tropical-storm-resilient System for Coastal Cities.” Prof. Yi-Qing Ni of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University chaired the opening session, while Prof. You Dong chaired the keynote sessions and delivered the concluding remarks.

The workshop brought together experts, scholars, and industry representatives from leading universities, research institutions, and enterprises in Mainland China and Hong Kong. Prof. Yukio Tamura of Chongqing University, an internationally renowned expert in wind engineering and a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, delivered the plenary lecture, sharing cutting-edge research on wind hazard and risk mitigation. Prof. Lin Zhao of Guangxi University/Tongji University, Dr. Neptune Yu of Arup, and Dr. Charles Cheung of NVIDIA delivered keynote presentations on topics including intelligent wind engineering for bridges, structural design under extreme wind events, and scientific visualization for digital cities. 

The workshop also featured a dedicated session for early-career researchers, covering a wide range of emerging topics, including AI-based typhoon forecasting, urban wind-hazard simulation, infrastructure resilience, UAV-based inspection, and digital twins. These presentations highlighted the latest advances in applying intelligent technologies to tropical storm disaster prevention and mitigation.

The successful workshop further strengthened interdisciplinary exchanges and collaboration among academia, industry, and research institutions in the field of tropical storm disaster prevention and mitigation. It also provided new insights and technological support for enhancing the capacity of coastal cities to cope with extreme weather events and advancing the development of climate-resilient cities.
