From 1 to 3 July 2026, the 1st International Workshop on Scientific Machine Learning and Large Models in Civil Engineering (SMLLM 2026) was held at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The workshop was chaired by Prof. Yi-Qing Ni, Chair Professor of Smart Structures and Rail Transit at PolyU and Dean of the PolyU Hangzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute.
At the opening ceremony, Prof. Yi-Qing Ni delivered the welcome address on behalf of the Organising Committee, while Prof. Yeong-Bin Yang, Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Honorary Dean of the School of Civil Engineering at Chongqing University, delivered the opening address.
Six internationally renowned scholars were invited to deliver keynote lectures, including Prof. Lu Lu of Yale University, Prof. Xin-Zheng Lu of Tsinghua University, Prof. Hao Sun of Renmin University of China, Prof. Hong-Xia Yang and Prof. Zhen-Yu Yin of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Prof. Yong Yuan of Tongji University.
The workshop attracted more than 160 scholars from the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Pakistan, as well as Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Focusing on the innovative applications of scientific machine learning and large models in civil engineering, the workshop featured 20 thematic sessions and more than 100 academic presentations, including keynote lectures, invited talks, and oral paper presentations.
The discussions covered the latest research developments and emerging trends in physics-informed neural networks, generative artificial intelligence and large models, structural health monitoring, digital twins, intelligent construction, computer vision, geotechnical engineering and infrastructure safety.
The workshop provided a high-level international platform for academic exchange and collaboration in scientific machine learning and large models in civil engineering, further promoting the integration of artificial intelligence with civil engineering research and practice.
