Signing ceremony for the establishment of the PolyU - Hangzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute

On 7th November 2023, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the municipal government of Gongshu District in Hangzhou jointly held an agreement signing and plate unveiling ceremony for the establishment of the PolyU - Hangzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute. The research institute consists of three research centers, namely the Intelligent Rail Transit Research Center, the Grand Canal Culture and Tourism Research Center, and the Digital Healthcare and Aesthetics Research Center. Professor Yi-Qing Ni, Director of the National Rail Transit Electrification and Automation Engineering Technology Research Center (Hong Kong Branch), who is also one of the leaders of the Intelligent Rail Transit Research Center, and Dr. You-Wu Wang, Research Assistant Professor at PolyU, attended the unveiling ceremony. Mr. Tai-Fai Lam, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Chairman of the PolyU Council, and Mr. Zhi-Long Li, Secretary of the Gongshu District Committee of the CPC, delivered speeches at the ceremony. Professor Jin-Guang Teng, President of PolyU, Professor Yu-Hang Chao, Vice-President of PolyU, Mr. Xiu-Hua Lou, Director of the Hangzhou Municipal Science and Technology Bureau, Mr. Fei Huang, a member of Gongshu District Committee of the CPC and Executive Deputy District Mayor, Mr. Jian-Li Shen, Deputy District Mayor, and the heads of relevant departments attended the ceremony.

This ceremony signifies the commencement of a new phase of collaboration between PolyU and Gongshu District, promoting research resource integration and complementarity, and achieving mutual benefit in scientific research. Gongshu District will fully support the operation and development of the PolyU - Hangzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute, setting a model of win-win cooperation between a university and the local area. In his speech, Mr. Tai-Fai Lam remarked that PolyU would leverage its strengths in research and education, with focuses on areas such as the Grand Canal Culture and Tourism, intelligent transportation, and digital healthcare and aesthetics to drive technological innovation and commercialization. The collaboration agreement was signed by Mr. Shen and Prof. Chao on behalf of both parties.

The new Intelligent Rail Transit Research Center will study intelligent digital solutions to support the rapid development of rail transportation, promote in depth integration of industry, academia, and research, for application of advanced technologies in the rail transportation field. It will also facilitate complementary and coordinated development in science and technology between Hangzhou and Hong Kong, creating a first-class technological innovation base.
