Aims & Characteristics

Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes

We equip graduates with the technical and academic skills necessary to excel in the areas of building sciences and building services engineering.

This programme addresses the demand for locally trained building services engineers with expertise in consultancy, contracting, building management, and research and development.

Our graduates possess a broad range of personal skills, including effective communication, critical thinking, independent learning, and innovative problem-solving.

Programme Characteristics

Students learn the art and science of providing safe, healthy, and energy-efficient built environments with minimal adverse ecological impacts. They are presented with intellectual challenges that prepare them to become industry leaders.

Our students have the opportunity to work in teams, lead small projects, and engage in independent study while collaborating with highly qualified professional staff . They also have access to various types of design software and laboratory facilities equipped with the latest building science and engineering applications, such as artificial intelligence and big data for smart buildings.

We offer local and international summer placement opportunities, and students participating in our Student Exchange Programme can study for a semester at partner universities in the United States, Europe, Australia, Russia, Southeast Asia, or Mainland China.

Our students frequently receive scholarships from professional bodies and major organisations in Hong Kong.

Recognition & Prospects

Professional Recognition

The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) has granted full accreditation to the BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering.

Graduates of this programme may qualify for Scheme A training with the HKIE in the following disciplines: (i) Building Services, (ii) Fire, (iii) Environmental*, and (iv) Energy. The HKIE-accredited academic programmes in the Building Services discipline are reciprocally recognised by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) in the UK.

* Upon completion of specific elective subjects.

Career Prospects

Graduates of this programme have good career prospects in the building construction and real estate sectors.

The rapid construction of new state-of-the-art buildings in Hong Kong has provided numerous attractive, local employment opportunities. The programme’s wide recognition has expanded these opportunities to Mainland China and overseas.

Graduates often begin their careers as trainee engineers in government departments, consulting firms, contracting companies, property management companies, and utility companies.

First-class Honours graduates may also find research as an attractive option because the field of building development in Hong Kong has embraced advanced technologies that warrant of in-depth investigation.

Curriculum

Students are admitted to the Senior Year of the 4-year degree programme. The total credits requirement for the senior year curriculum is 68 academic credits plus 3 training credits.

Students are required to take 44 credits for compulsory subjects and 15 credits for elective subjects.

Students are considered for credit transfers based on their previous academic performance in AD/HD programmes. Students not meeting the equivalent standard of the undergraduate degree Language Communication Requirements (LCR) will be required to take degree LCR subjects.

In Year One, students apply their foundational knowledge to the design and operation of major building services engineering systems. In the Final Year, students choose electives from a pool of courses that address the latest developments and technology in the fields of building sciences and engineering, and they also undertake a major project.

Student Message

As a student of Building Services Engineering (now Building Sciences and Engineering) at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), I had the opportunity to learn from some of the most knowledgeable and experienced professors in the field. The curriculum was rigorous and challenging, but also highly rewarding.

One of the highlights of my academic journey was the opportunity to work on various group system design projects with classmates from diverse backgrounds. These projects not only allowed us to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in class but also fostered teamwork and communication skills, which will be very useful for my future career.

Aside from academic courses, the university offers a wide range of extracurricular activities such as sports clubs, workshops, and social events. These opportunities enabled me to meet new people and expand my horizons.

Overall, my experience at PolyU was challenging and rewarding, equipping me me well for the future.

I was very fortunate to have chosen this programme, as it allowed me to learn from many world-class professors. The department also has extensive professional laboratory facilities, providing a high-quality learning environment and learning process. My most memorable experience was my third year internship at Sanfield (Management) Limited, a subsidiary of Sun Hung Kai Properties, where I was able to put into practice the latest technologies and standards learnt in class, such as Building Information Modelling (BIM).

During my fourth year, I had the opportunity to participate in a semester exchange at the National University of Singapore. This experience enabled me to step out of my comfort zone, broaden my horizons, and learn more about local green building designs.

After graduation, I aim to obtain professional qualifications and become a registered building services engineer. Studying in the BSE programme allowed me to participate in the "Scheme A" training programme, which has facilitated my progression towards this goal. Now, I am a Building Services Engineering Graduate working in the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) in Hong Kong.
